It's striking that evil disfunctional cleptocracies (#russia, at 48%) are not _that_ worse than functional democracies (think #Germany, #Austria, that are at about 30%). I mean, 48 is more than 30, but not by an order of magnitude!

If it's true, then _who_ owns the #wealth is way more important than how much they own.

Alternatively, the russian number may be based on official numbers, in which case it's useless, and actuals are in the 90%s.

I made a #data #plot for some internal analysis at work, and then was like wow am I on shrooms? Why am I tripping?..

Turns out, the lines are just a bit offset, and I happened to hit a color pair that triggers a mild Kitaoka-style #visual #illusion (at least for me haha)

Had to change the colors to something milder :)

Cool article on avoiding "Dark Triad Personality" in tech. tldr: just leave. Avoid at all costs.

https://xander.ai/on-dark-triads-in-silicon-valley

Fav quotation so far: "They are evolutionarily hardwired to withstand infinitely more emotional crap than you are" (relatable :)

In general, in #Europe, rich people live in #city centers (pretty, historic, walkable), while poor people tend to live on the periphery. Berlin (left #map) is a good example. While in the #US, because of the #sprawl and racism, downtowns are often run-down and poor, and rich people live in the #suburbs.

Curiously tho, #Germany has 1-2 cities with an "American" pattern, where downtowns are poor. Like #Nurnberg (right). Is it because its center was destroyed by bombings, and then reconstructed?

@mrbarrington@mastodon.social That's just the biggest one, not the only one. Navalny's team had published lots of stuff on this topic, and some really cool videos.

@mrbarrington@mastodon.social Yeah then at least for cleptocracies it is pretty much utterly useless. If for example #putin's private peninsula is counted as #KGB (state) property and not his personal property, then it would have been fairer to show russia in gray, tbh

And if you haven't yet tried to trick an LLM Gandalf to reveal his password, you should absolutely do it! (An awesome mini-game on prompt injections, 7 levels)

@NicoleCRust@neuromatch.social This sounds exactly like Old English / Old Norse Kennings!! Especially the "battling the blinking cursor" one!

Useful, practical, and comprehensive piece of advice on #resume prepration and #jobsearch optimization from @chipro (who is afaik not yet on 🐘)

https://huyenchip.com/2023/01/24/what-we-look-for-in-a-candidate.html

I particularly like those parts where she goes against the grain of "popular knowledge" propagated by countless "advisers" and blog posts (regarding keywords, metrics)

@dggoldst@hci.social Yeah, both me and my son :) It's not too strong, but it seems to wave a bit in response to saccades. May depend on monitor lightness and temperature though :)

@Supposenot@mastodon.social I'm so confused tbh. If she were a villain or a side-hero, would have been an absurdist joke, but presumably (no idea, but judging from the name) she's like idk, the main character? And a positive one, at that?

@RWerpachowski@mastodon.green One insect neuron is equivalent to like tens of thousands of formal neurons. Have you seen the microphotographs of these monsters??

@RWerpachowski@mastodon.green That's an interesting point! I haven't thought about that...

Although wouldn't the split between socialized countries (everyone rents) and kinda conservative countries (owning a home is still the goal for many) be greater in wealth inequality, rather than income inequality?

@beaubouchard@mastodon.social Whatevs, it's not like there's a canonical name for every meme, is it now? ;) "Math woman meme" works just fine on Google; I checked, so must be an ok-ish tag...

@thegradient@sigmoid.social Is it really "AI", or "AI / ML / DataScience"? I mean, personally I tend to understand AI extremely broadly, but I remember how people had these 100-tweet-long disputes about the limits of the term... Could it help to be just a bit more vague and inclusive here? Or are you afraid to grow too large and too expensive?

Replying to
@thegradient@sigmoid.social Thanks :) AI and DataScience are both super-weird words, as people understand it so differently! Like, some people believe AI minus GOFAI is strictly a subset of ML, and a rather small one (aka regression is not AI). While some believe that ML lies strictly within AI :) I'm definitely in the 2nd camp (I think an if-then is an AI - just a very simple decision tree haha), and it seems you are too, but not all ppl are :) Thanks gain!
