Production Engineering Manager at Meta

I love hacking on different tech, including setting up my own Mastodon server. I am also anti-fascist. Guess what, if you are anti anti-fascist, you're a fucking fascist.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Agreed. By using an LLM, especially for commercial software, you are setting yourself up for patent lawsuits. Everything an LLM spits out is, at best, a remix of others' work.

@gabrielesvelto@mas.to The bubble is starting to burst at this point. As soon as the VCs get off the hype train, stop flushing money down the toilet, and do the 3rd grade math required to figure out this is all 100% unsustainable, things are going to come crashing down. https://news.slashdot.org/story/26/06/24/0551205/us-ai-stock-sell-off-shakes-markets-from-wall-street-to-asia

@nixCraft@mastodon.social I 100% concur. In my younger days, I had a much higher tolerance for bullshit from people. Now that time is getting shorter, I just want to spend my time either alone, with my partner, or the genuinely good people that I'm friends with. I just stopped engaging with shitty people. No more bullshit.

@nixCraft I just force 2fa via TOTP for password based auth on all my servers that are connected to the internet. This has been my standard config for many years at this point and I've never had a problem. I also turn off root logins and kill all user accounts that are not mine.

@jon_wnc@mstdn.social @nixCraft@mastodon.social You can always just rate limit the SYN packets using iptables/nftables, which defeats the main (retry) attack surface from a single IP due to sshd's slow fail approach. Something like this would work: https://serverfault.com/questions/340256/should-i-rate-limit-packets-with-iptables

@nixCraft And here's a new post from Ed about the recent shenanigans around Copilot (and others). It can all be summed up with the statement that the cost for AI training and inference basically makes the product unaffordable. https://www.wheresyoured.at/ais-economics-dont-make-sense/

@nixCraft It's also noteworthy that Meta's stock just dropped 10% after the earnings call wherein they stated that they're raising their capex range by $10B (from 115-135 to 125-145: https://t.brk.io/HR) I think we're on the cusp of seeing a real reality check here, wherein the bubble starts to burst.

To be honest, if you're blindly trusting AI and it breaks shit, I have zero sympathy for you. You actually deserve to have your shit broken if you're doing this.

RE: @bastardsheep@aus.social

I've always considered BMWs to be overpriced piles of shit, but this is clearly next level.

As an aside, I also think that about 95% of BMW drivers are the worst people on earth, at least according to how they drive.

@timbray@cosocial.ca This is just more "AI is going to solve all of the world's problems" BS. Most of the marketing around AI is somewhere between ok and complete nonsense. I always think of this classic Tom Waits song whenever some AI hawker pulls some BS out of their ass. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2_snSkpULQ
