@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org If you're somewhere that has smoke issues less often, it can be useful to collapse the Corsi-Rosenthal Box to put in storage. I left off the solid cardboard side and loosely taped 4 filters together so I can un-tape one side to unfold the box and lay it flat. I just put the open side on the floor and the fan on top. It probably doesn't filter quite as efficiently because of some air leaks, but it means I can fold everything up and put it in a closet when the smoke clears.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org Mint can be super aggressive! My dad once planted some in a flowerbed, and a few years later it was choking out even the grass outside of the flowerbed. He ended up transplanting a few mint plants into a pot, and sprayed the whole area with herbicide to get rid of the mint so he could plant some flowers in its place. Now his mint plants stay in the pots so they're easy to contain.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org At least we get a really nice crop of dried spearmint leaves every year for things like tea making!

@Jeanniewarner@wandering.shop @bob_zim@infosec.exchange @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org Hmm. I didn't know it was considered invasive anywhere, but I guess both of those make sense (my dad has had a similar battle with blackberries, which almost tore his fence down and tried to take over his vegetable garden). Luckily I'm in West Texas, where it's dry enough that almost nothing grows without you deliberately watering it, so most invasive plant species stay contained to your property. The main invasive plants we worry about are bindweed and tumbleweeds, both of which will grow on roadsides (from the rain runoff) and in irrigated fields, so they can actually spread along highways without being planted intentionally.

@ChanceyFleet Even for me, with mostly good eyesight (aside from needing strong glasses/contacts), the alt text is helpful to provide context on what details of the image are relevant to the post. The strong accessibility and alt text culture is something I haven't seen as much in other platforms, and I don't have to stare at the picture as long to figure out the "point" of it anymore. It's almost like for me the alt text serves as a big arrow pointing to the "important" parts of the picture.

@downey@floss.social An example I've dealt with was an ASP .NET Blazor website, which requires webassembly for basic loading of the page. At the time I started the project, we had a significant number of users still on Internet Explorer, so I added a javascript file to the root page that detects if webassembly is missing and shows a popup suggesting to open Edge. That prevented me from needing to maintain a list of browsers which either do or don't support it, and I could just let the browser tell me itself.

@jnl@hcommons.social I'm in a similar situation, considering an electric car. One reason I'm considering the latest year model instead of one a few years old is that the model I'm looking at just switched to the NACS charging port, and it's sounding pretty likely that most charging networks will migrate to NACS in a few years, so I'm hoping that means I won't have to fiddle with adapters as often in a few years.

Another reason is that I've heard the older models of the Hyundai Ioniq (the model I'm considering) only trigger their "battery preconditioning" mode (warming up the battery in cold weather so it charges faster) if you use the built-in navigation to find a charger. Newer models add a button to turn it on manually if you're using a different navigation method (Google Maps through Android Auto, etc.). I guess research your specific model for any customer complaints about weird idiosyncrasies.

I've also found that there are a number of the 2026 year model of the Ioniq on the used car market already, with significantly lower price than a brand new one, so I don't quite have to pay the full price of a brand new car. It's not as low as it would be to get one a few years old, but at least it gives me a bit of a discount. That's something to consider if there's a new feature you're not willing to compromise on.

Mainly for me, the few generational upgrades make this new version more "worth it" than it has been in the past, which is why I am considering the electric car now instead of a few years ago (plus the charging networks have spread a lot more in my rural-ish area than they used to be). If there isn't a major difference between years of the model you're considering, I don't see much reason to go with the newer one at this point.

@downey@floss.social Occasionally there's a browser feature that is required for basic functionality of a web app, but you can almost always detect if it's missing from a few lines of javascript code, and only show the warning then.
