Has anyone out there made their own heated clothing? Either using purchased nichrome wire or harvesting it out of hair dryers? I found an Instructable but it would be nice to talk to someone who'd actually done it. I do community electronics recycling and have access to a lot of old hair dryers and laptop batteries. It would be cool to be able to turn them into heated winter gear. #solarpunkSunday #solarpunk #makers #diy #sewing

I finally remembered to take a #Mosstodon picture! I'd love to know more about why it grows those tall reddish bits. I've listened to the audiobook of Gathering Moss several times, and I've spent a lot of time looking at moss, but I never know if I'm connecting the right audiobook stories to the right IRL moss phenomena.

This was shot at the edge of a tiny pond we dug in the woods and lined with a tarp protected by old carpets. It doesn't get enough water to stay full, but it sure grows moss!

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social I definitely know the feeling. I probably spend ~30% of my time these days feeling entirely Done With This Sh#t. I'm a community organizer in a rural small town, and it frequently feels like I'm spitting at a wildfire. But I know that if I hold on, get some rest, and take care of myself, I'll cycle back around to the stubborn, grim joy of causing good trouble 😅 Songs that help me: "Matches" by Sifu Hotman "Tunnel Vision" by Aisha Badru "Roguelike" by Guante "Tomorrow" by Miner

RE: @vlrny@disabled.social

#ifihadabilliondollars as a small town community organizer...
Step 1: Buy every neglected building and parcel of land in town and put it in a community land trust.
Step 2: Set up a local job guarantee program that trained people up in construction, open source tech, and/or #permaculture and then paid them to use those skills to benefit the community.
Step 3: See if we can get ourselves to Psalm for the Wild-Built before the rest of the world drags us into Parable of the Sower.

@alex@himself.alexanderdunkel.com I'm in the very early stages of building a tech collective in my small town, and this is exactly the kind of thing I want to be able to offer my neighbors. We're starting out with a computer recycling event. We're going to teach people how to get the magnets out of a hard drive, and we're hoping to get enough working/compatible other parts to start building a community server.

@annaecook@mastodon.social I've always liked the "Appropriate Tech" framework. It focuses on building tech that's sustainable, people-based, and locally autonomous. I'm still new to Mastodon and haven't found where the appropriate tech folks are hanging out on here yet, so if any #solarpunk or #maker folks know where to look, I'd love some hints 😂
