mastodon 4.7.3A podcast about the latest new episodes of Star Trek by two higher education faculty, a media prof and a philosophy prof.
We go beyond fan reaction to talk about the character development; story arcs; the production design; and the philosophy, ethics, and lessons learned from the story, which makes sense, given that we are real faculty.
All Mastodon posts are by the media prof, Michael.
Them: Starfleet Academy is canceled after Season 2.
Us: "Well, that's a design flaw."
New podcast!
This time we look at the first of the JJ Abrams Star Trek movies, simply titled "Star Trek."
We conclude that there's a lot to like in this movie, but don't try to connect it too tightly to long-term Star Trek continuity.
This week, our Starfleet Academy episode 6 podcast had our biggest ever record of downloads/streams in the first 24 hours after publication. Our previous record was for Starfleet Academy episode 3.
More evidence that interest is high for Starfleet Academy, so we can ignore the sourpusses.
Just a reminder that our next podcast will be May 17, (re-watching the movies while waiting for new Star Trek in July).
The current podcast is about Star Trek Into Darkness. Some like it and some not.
Join us to see how Rodney and Michael sort it out.

Fun fact about our podcast:
In the last week or so, we have had a burst of downloads/streams from Shanghai, China (according to the IP addresses).
Even though there is no new Star Trek this week, downloads are still going at a record pace, for us.
Our Starfleet Academy podcasts continue to stream/download at way above our usual pace.
Our SFA #1&2 podcast is already our TOP podcast ever. The SFA ep 3 podcast is #3 and the SFA ep 4 podcast is already at #4. Last weekend's podcast about episode 5 is already in the top 20% of streams/downloads and is moving up fast.
It's evidence that Starfleet Academy has very high interest.
Don't let the naysayers get you down.

It's podcasting day for us. We're completing our rewatch of the theatrical films while we wait for the next new Trek this summer.
Join us today to examine the first JJ Abrams Star Trek movie. It will drop around suppertime US time, midnight UTC.
Yah, I went "WHAT?" when I realized what it was. But it was definitely fan service for the fans who have been around Star Trek the longest. And the words really resonated with the current story.

It's podcasting day for us today, about the Starfleet Academy season finale.
Last week's podcast set another record in terms of streams and downloads - more evidence of how popular the Academy series is (contradicting the grumps).
Last week, we had our fastest pace of streams and downloads ever for our podcast about Starfleet Academy episodes 1 & 2.
In the first 24 hours, our episode 3 pace is even faster.
Join us for thoughtful, intelligent Star Trek talk.

Although new on-screen Star Trek is our main focus, we're applying our analytical process to the Star Trek Khan audio podcast series. It got a lot of attention when it premiered, but not as much since.

We've had brisk podcast listening/downloading over the last few days. Maybe people are clearing the decks to get ready for the Star Trek Starfleet Academy premiere Thursday.
Join us a week from today (Sunday) to talk about the two-episode premiere.

This coming Sunday, we'll drop a special Star Trek Academy podcast, about the Star Trek Khan audio series.
We hadn't originally planned to look at Khan, because our niche is new TV Star Trek, but we're still in the new Trek hiatus so we're taking a look/listen.
It's podcasting day for us, about Starfleet Academy episode "300th Night."
If you are one who listens immediately, note that the podcast may drop an hour or two later than usual, because something else this afternoon may delay editing a bit.

It's podcast day for us, as we take a serious look at the Starfleet Academy episode Ko'Zeine.
Remember, we don't trash Star Trek. We LIKE Starfleet Academy.
Watch for the episode to drop around suppertime, US time and Midnight UTC.

Paramount Skydance has confirmed plans to merge Paramount+ and HBO Max into a single streaming platform.
That could allow a lot more people to see new Star Trek.
But the deal still needs approvals from the US Department of Justice and European regulators.
And the massive resulting debt could threaten the pretty expensive production of new Star Trek series, at least for a while.
We've had a pretty brisk pace of downloads and listens so far to our podcast about the Starfleet Academy premiere.
We cordially invite you to come along for the ride.
