@nixCraft@mastodon.social To be honest, I don't know what to make of these numbers. I've been a Linux user since Mandrake and Slackware had some impact before that, when a stack of floppies was the installation source. Part of me worries that these are bots running on a Linux system with a smarter method of agent identifiers. Part of me wonders if this is a backlash against Microsoft constantly advertising on Windows 11, among other annoyances. Maybe it's Steam deck and Steam Machines changing the landscape of desktop systems. I'd love to really know what is driving this. It looks real enough and correlates against increases in other stats, such as the Steam survey.

@coreyspowell Progress relies on understanding. Science is built on hypothesis / observation / analysis and identification of the success or failure of the hypothesis. Elon Musk demonstrates clearly that he has no idea what science is. Much as he has demonstrated that he has no idea what software engineering is.

@dicenbuttons@mastodon.social I know you tagged this #holly but I'm wondering if it should be #oregongrape Love the picture either way! https://www.growforagecookferment.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/oregon-grape-berries.jpg

@zwol@masto.hackers.town @pkhuong@discuss.systems @Loosf@yiff.life Here's the experience of a more senior developer. https://mikelovesrobots.substack.com/p/wheres-the-shovelware-why-ai-coding Lots to think about here. Between these articles on whether AI coding actually speeds things up at all, and Pluralistics article ... https://pluralistic.net/2026/01/06/1000x-liability/ To me, quality is what distinguishes good products from bad. Quality appears to be at risk from AI coding.
