@LRRRonEarth@beige.party @HamonWry@mastodon.world Wow. “Linguistic prescriptivist”. Just, wow. It’s amazing how some people can be so smart and yet so utterly idiotic at the same time. “Continent” isn’t a linguistic definition, it’s geological. But, mostly just, what the Hell is wrong with people?

I think the key point is that most of the students trying for the prize have No knowledge of classics.They’re computer science students trying simply to identify letter shapes. So they aren’t finding Greek. They’re just finding sequences of letters. And the patterns they’re finding are completely backward viewable, so you can see the ‘crinkle’ pattern that the algorithm turns into a proposed ‘letter’. I was skeptical,but it seems very real.

The latest industry hit by #enshittification is font foundries. This may be common knowledge out there, but I just found out about it today. Case study: Monotype has been buying up all of the legacy font collections and/or companies in recent years. Then, Monotype was purchased by HGGC . . a "middle-market private equity firm" . . and suddenly Monotype is shutting down their web interfaces (fonts.com, etc.) and auditing everyone for usage of Helvetica (etc.) No value add. Just value extraction.
