Quick experiment:

1. searched a several year dead account; no results
2. looked at several year dead account via the remote endpoint
3. searched for several year dead account again; results show up now

I'm not fully familiar with the details of activitypub protocol, so pardon the stupid question, but I don't understand how this is this different from any mastodon server that has full text search enabled: when someone on the server looks at an account on another server, it gets cached locally

@mindpersephone @ghost_bird @CharlotteEowyn @MzAprilDaniels @eliza Yeah, one of the weaknesses with ActivityPub is that it relies on third party servers to be good actors, so I'm sorry you all got hurt by this 😩 It feels like there needs to be some sort of ActivityPub 2.0 that combines federation with end to end encryption so that random servers don't have access to all the user traffic, but I don't know nearly enough to even suggest how such a thing would be architected

@mindpersephone @ghost_bird @CharlotteEowyn @MzAprilDaniels @eliza I realize full text search is a controversial subject in fedi and it makes me uncomfortable myself, so it may be worth a block anyways, but this seems more likely to be an "unexperienced admin that doesn't consider the security implications of their decisions" than "intentional data scraping conspiracy" to me
