The Black Panthers get a pass; they didn't live long enough to become the villains, and there's no guarantee that they would have. The BPP was far more prefigurative than vangaurdist, and it was the combination of these things that made them seem so threatening to the powers that be.

I didn't say they weren't, I just said their prefigurative politics were more prominent. I'm of the opinion that what someone does is more important than what they say, and if they hadn't been undermined by COINTELPRO who knows where their thinking and organizational structure would have gone. I just think there was something truly transformative about the BPP that could have grown into something beautiful if they'd had the opportunity.

The US killed Iran's leadership and strengthened their resolve. Now a bunch of younger, more creative, and more passionate people have taken leadership positions. Iranian propaganda has proven more effective and internet savvy, and their military decision-making has likely improved due to destagnation. Trump literally threatening to wipe the entire civilization off the face of the earth likely pushes Iranians who are against the regime to reconsider (even if only temporarily while they deal with the bigger threat), and I couldn't say I wouldn't make the same judgment if I were in their position. What a colossal failure, but hey, at least the defense contractors are making money, right? I can't wait for the blowback from this to inspire the next round of interventions, if we're even still around by then.

Not weird at all, they're eating like many hunter-gatherer societies used to. It was very common to season meat with fruits and honey.

Alcohol has also just been more prevalent in human cultures dating back to prehistory. Some of the earliest evidence we have of permanent human settlements were breweries, theorized to have been built by people who still lived semi-nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyles. That would mean that humans first started making permanent settlements and doing large-scale agriculture only to produce alcohol, and still mainly relied on hunting and gathering for their caloric needs. Other drugs / intoxicants have been used by humans for at least as long, but none have been so central to the development of civilization and culture than alcohol.

A candidate invited Hasan to a rally.

Hasan and his fans never ever mention the candidate Hasan is supposed to be supporting

The candidate is Abdul El-Sayed who is running for Senate in Michigan. Don't know where you're getting that Hasan never mentions him, they had a whole interview and Hasan has spoken about him frequently since then.

A few Dems said that's not a good idea because he's not helping candidates, he's just increasing his own views.

Hasan has a large platform that he lends to candidates to give them a boost. I guarantee you more people knew of Hasan Piker than Abdul El-Sayed before his interview. This idea that Hasan is just clout-chasing makes no sense. I don't align 100% with his worldview but this whole thing is clearly just a smear campaign organised by Third Way because of Hasan's advocacy for Palestine, opposition to the blockade on Cuba, and his efforts to get progressives elected in Democratic primaries.

The Cuba flotilla was organized by an international coalition of individuals and organizations who made an open call for more organizations to join the effort, and many did; 650 delegates from 33 countries and 120 organizations. Hasan Piker was part of a delegation of journalists and influencers there to document and raise awareness of the blockade. Together the volunteers delivered 20 tons of food, medicine, and solar panels, which is nothing to scoff at. Also, Hasan is working on a documentary that he made from interviewing people in Cuba, and didn't actually do much vlogging because of the blackout. I don't think he has said if he contributed any personal funds to the effort but he isn't the type to publicize that.

I was asking @Vupware@lemmy.zip their opinion on how Hasan mishandled the Cuba flotilla. You're literally the only one in this thread who mentioned his dog.

The SDF is still around defending AANES in one of the most conflict-ridden regions of the world. They call themselves Democratic Confederalists rather than anarchists, but they are the nearest long-standing polity to anarchist ideals.

What do you dislike about the way he handled the Cuba flotilla? Not trying to start an argument, just curious.

It’s the difference between defense and vengeance. In Transformers One they had already defeated the big bad and had the support of the other transformers, so killing him then was an unnecessary act of revenge. It’s different when you’re still fighting and the big bad’s death could make a difference in the outcome.

All gender affirming care that is or has been provided to minors at scale is reversible. The standard for providing gender affirming care to minors is puberty blockers and social transition, never anything permanent like surgery. Personally, I don’t see any cause for concern about potential harm to minors from providing gender affirming care, but I do see the harm that is done to them when that care is denied and find it far more concerning given that a common result of that harm is the most permanent and irreversible outcome possible, suicide.

Even in a country where the majority support a genocide there are those who don’t and are afraid to speak out, those who do speak out and are silenced, and those who sacrifice everything trying to stop it. Most acts of resistance by Israelis will never be brought to light because their government works tirelessly to bury them in darkness. By implying that every Israeli is responsible for the genocide and framing their documentation of their nation’s crimes as hypocrisy you are aiding the Israeli state’s efforts to delegitimize them. The creators of NAZA are risking their lives, and you can’t pretend their work is meaningless while also acknowledging how lethally hostile Israeli society is to those who speak the truth.

If you can’t see the value in getting direct testimony about the genocide from some of its perpetrators I don’t know what to tell you. There’s another documentary I’ve seen called The Act of Killing where the filmmakers interview former Indonesian death squad leaders about - and even have them reenact - their roles in the anti-communist purge in 1965-1966. Of course it’s important to hear from victims / survivors, but getting confessions from the people carrying out a genocide and documenting them thoroughly also has undeniable value.
