@mcspocky@mstdn.party Don't use Google. Try DuckDuckGo or other search engines, use Firefox or other browsers. If you then click that link, you'll see that Googles hasn't got anything. As it should be.
EDIT: Google, not Googles (Sausage fingers...)

Maybe because I learned PL/1 and 360 Assembler at the start...

@TheJen@beige.party Wrote my first programme (English spelling!) in PL/1 in 1969. Learned 360/Assembler in 1970. Modified IBM operating systems to make them faster. Later somehow drifted into management, consulting, sales training so lost touch with the bits and bytes.
You are so right about the current generation, though. None of them know the difference between a feature and a benefit. Which is why so much software now is loaded with features which bring me no benefit. And don't get me started on UIs...

@TheJen@beige.party @bridgeenjoyer@gamepad.club I had so much fun helping build Europe's first online holiday reservation system with an IBM 360/50 and 9600 baud lines! Programme modules with 800 bytes max. 70 hour weeks, but full of enjoyment and pride in the work.

@hananc@tooot.im Quote from Edsger Dijkstra: "It is practically impossible to teach good programming to students that have had a prior exposure to BASIC: as potential programmers they are mentally mutilated beyond hope of regeneration."

@peterbrown Since getting my German passport after 50 years of residence, I have delayed renewing my UK passport. Primarily because of the ridiculous rigmarole of appling digitally. Now I don't think I'll even bother.
Improving people's lives? You're having a laugh! Socialism? Never heard of it, son. Reducing inequality? Are you mad? That would make us billionaires poorer! Get back in your box...

@jon@gruene.social @deadliftbear@mas.to @Edent@mastodon.social The eezyNRW system does make you use an app and register your details before using it, but it works seamlessly across all North-Rhine-Westfalia. 18m people, dozens of cities.
