RE: https://mamot.fr/@pluralistic/116527238498498125 Today's dose of Doctorow's De-programming: "This is the kind of doctrine you can only fully embrace after sustaining the kind of highly specific neurological injury that is induced by taking an economics degree, an injury that makes you incapable of perceiving or reasoning about power. Under the doctrine of revealed preferences, someone who sells their kidney to make the rent has a revealed preference for only having one kidney" #capitalism #economics #NeoclassicalEconNonsense

One of my bedrock beliefs is that capitalists *really* hate capitalism. They may name their beloved institutes after the likes of Adam Smith, but they ignore everything Smith had to say about the necessity of competition to keep markets from turning into monopolies: https://pluralistic.net/2023/06/09/commissar-merck/#price-giver -- If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this thread to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog: https://pluralistic.net/2026/05/06/champerty-loves-company/#circle-of-life 1/

@alienghic@timeloop.cafe Exactly! And the scale is almost inconceivable! Academic economics is virtually captured by believers in the Neoclassical paradigm. Dissenting views are typically banished. And who do politicians listen to? You guessed it! And they're "Climate Change Doesn't Matter"-ing us into oblivion... Sometime when you have an hour, Prof Steve Keen, a "heterodox" economist, is worth a listen: https://youtu.be/5LvyxH3O7kE

The appalling neoclassical economics of climate change from heterodox economist Steve Keen

@alienghic@timeloop.cafe Yep, the rich people, and even worse, their apologists. The economist whose paper trashed LTG (disingenuously & inaccurately) went on to win the Nobel Prize & teach at Harvard! Neoclassical Economics virtually dismisses any effects of AGW on "the economy!" And yes! How many people today realize that we are living in a collapse scenario?

@mce@cosocial.ca Great question! I had a similar one two years ago when my oregano turned into a yuuge patch, and the honey bees went bonkers for it! I was heard to say on multiple occasions that I was seriously curious as to what oregano honey might taste like. I never found out. Now, though, I hope you get to experience the rosemary variant. Sláinte!

@ThisIsTrue@mastodon.social Not quite comfortable with this. Couldn't both be correct? Speaking as a novice wrt system dynamics, couldn't corruption be an emergent property of the system? And, as something of a (long-time) observer of human nature, it occurs to me to ask: Isn't everyone corruptible? I don't know, but until convinced otherwise, I'm sticking with Lord Acton on this one...

@marjolica@social.linux.pizza Thanks for that, & I'm with you all the way wrt capitalism's failure to satisfy what Clara Mattei calls "the logic of need." Re. Doctorow misreprenting the concept (revealed preference), however, I'd like to know: Does it? Maybe I missed some nuance of your analysis, but afaict he nailed that particular facet of what my own economics mentor (P-K scholar Steve Keen) would characterize as the mainstream's abject codswallop. (His own words, though, would likely be a bit more "salty!")
