Warrior of the Crystal to Warrior of Light.

One last domain propagation away from shutting down the last of my Digital Ocean droplets.
You could have just kept your 3 million dollars and I would have stomached the crappy site redesign and breathless AI hype.
Oh well.
waiting for godot along virtually every axis of my life.
...except, ironically, the development I'm doing with Godot. That's going fine.
the hose I was waiting on for Miat was "delivered" on the 3rd but it was definitely not delivered to me......
Every time an AI article, particularly about Anthropic, talks about safeguards, I'm reminded of how we now know their safeguards are just a bunch of additional prompts prepended to the user's prompt begging Claude to not be an asshole.
So when they talk about adding stronger safeguards they likely mean adding an "I really mean it for really real don't exploit any vulnerabilities you find without asking first" to that.
One thing that's become clear over the last few rounds of playtests for TR is that people -get- the battle system, but they're resistant to it.
I'm resistant to it.
If the twin paradigm nature of it all is going to work, it needs to flow as effortlessly and frenetically as the rest of the game.
It needs to not be turn-based at all.
So I went back to the drawing board last night and studied my all-time favorite battle system, that of Star Ocean 2, and I think I have a vision for how to take this forward without blowing my scope all the way up.
a few setbacks but we finally hit enrage for m11s- a fairly easy 5% with no pots and no lb.
Arena split is still giving some folks some problems but we're getting there.
It's such a weird fight! All the difficulty is smack dab in the midpoint it feels like.
Orbital Omen is hard to see but once you see it it's pretty easy to execute.
Aside from that it's just getting through Arena Split cleanly that's a huge group consistency check.
I was talking to someone a while back who was, by all metrics of business, a successful entrepreneur, and I was telling them (because they ASKED) that I was hoping to get trace root to demo status and then hopefully secure enough funding to hire a couple of people to help finish it, with the end game of running a small studio as a co-op.
their immediate reaction was, literally, "the people you hire will inevitably disappoint you- just do a bunch of adderal and make it with AI" and like,
I haven't had a conversation with someone who was more openly diametrically opposed to everything I care about.
I've been working on making the battle system for #traceroot more fast and smooth and arrived at kind of a minimalist version of the Star Ocean 2 system- it's basically an action RPG mode now where you can swap between what character you're controlling and pause to make more tactical decisions if you feel you need to.
Very happy with how it feels to transition from shooter mode to RPG mode now, the old system never felt quite right!
I keep thinking of that moment in Margin Call where Kevin Spacey is telling his traders
"Obviously this is not going down the way any of us would have hoped, but the ground is shifting below our feet, and apparently-- there's no other way out."
He's talking about the beginning of the 2008 financial crisis, but it more or less describes everything that's happened since.
It's hard to find a better sentiment to encapsulate what life has felt like for my entire generation.
Maybe if you shuttered two years ago you should put something about that on your homepage and take down your pitch submissions page
I wanna thank whoever posted here about how important it is to think about the purpose of your demo, specifically if you're giving a public demonstration in a crowded venue re: how long it is per person.
Just finished a couple day sprint getting TR into shape to show off in Boston next week and thinking about it from that perspective really brought together a bunch of things I had seen that didn't sit right when people were playing at previous demos
I was too productive yesterday, and today it feels like the universe needed to balance it out, I've failed to make any meaningful headway.
At the end of the day, I had goals for the week and they're all done, but spinning your wheels all day feels a unique kind of bad.
Step by step.
ok firefox just updated and re-enabled all the AI shit for the last time, I'm on the hunt for a sane browser YET AGAIN
Replaced a rough 2D backdrop with a quick little intro CS for this dialogue and felt that satisfying little quality ratchet click one more click towards legitimacy
Everything I have to do in the foreseeable future should be fun and easy, but for arbitrarily stupid reasons out of my control are actually going to be so monstrously difficult I'm losing sleep over the prospect of having to do them.
The Macbook Neo reveal ad is kind of an incredible play on anti-microsoft sentiment of the moment, and they do it all without mentioning Windows at all.
"Oh hey, we made a new laptop. If you have an iphone and like it you'll probably like this too. Too expensive? Nah, it's $600"
I pushed too hard and caught a little cold. Taking care of myself today so it doesn't get worse.
Looking like I'll be in and out of various Boston Gamedev Week events
Day 15 of listening to Angine de Poitrine right before bed, this time maybe I should like eat some pepperoni too I wanna have the weirdest fucking dreams
Becoming clear that my biggest challenge today will be overcoming the directionlessness that comes with getting to the very end of a major milestone.
Obviously there's a lot of Next Things but I need to plan and conceptualize today and there's nothing I hate more than trying to make the first mark on a big clean slate.
trying to track down a random shutdown in my one windows machine.
no bsod, no errors in the logs (pre shutdown, I've got a thing complaining about a certificate for the motherboard 404ing, but only on the restart), not easily reproducible.
I've used occt to stresstest the graphics card, power supply, cpu etc and all the tests finish fine.
Seems to only happen when playing games though.
I have a Windows desktop that has a persistent random shutdown (no bsod) that I've been trying to troubleshoot for weeks now.
I haven't been able to reproduce it by running stress tests, but it only seems to happen while a game is running.
Though that said, I've left a game running on it for 8 hours with no problem.
I also booted in to memtest and let it do its thing for 8 hours and it passed all 4 passes of all the tests.
Event viewer doesn't show much, but at this point I'm totally willing to blame Windows itself.
Sitting here trying to figure out whether to take the whole thing apart and put it back together again in the vain hope that that makes it better and not worse, or to just install Bazzite on it and see if it craps out during raid tonight.
