What can we learn from historical logbooks? Far more than routes and wind directions. Looking forward to our roundtable at the conference “Navigating Histories” at the German Maritime Museum to explore logbooks as sources for climate, mobility & global history #earlymodern #history #maritimehistory #histodons

The Predatory Sea: Human Trafficking and Captivity in the Seventeenth-Century Caribbean – Book Presentation on Monday, 9 March, 1pm.
As part of our online lecture series “Ships & Seafaring 1500–1800“, we are delighted to welcome Prof Dr Casey Schmitt (Cornell University) for a book presentation that promises to reshape how we think about maritime violence, captivity, and colonialism.
A century before the height of the Atlantic slave trade, early modern racialized slavery emerged through practices of captive-taking and human trafficking in the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Caribbean. Schmitt’s book – the first full-length study of this deeply entangled history of captivity and colonialism – reframes our understanding of early modern racialized slavery and colonialism.
Join us for free on Monday, 9 March 2026 on ZOOM.

On Christmas Eve 1757, sailor Dieterich Salomon wrote from the ship Concordia off St. Eustatius to his "dear father, mother, and sister", thankful to "celebrate Christmas" far from home yet close in heart. His letter reminds us: Christmas begins wherever people think of one another. Merry Christmas everyone
Sometimes I read historical letters that make me smile – until they quietly break my heart. A father wrote tenderly of his daughter on board. Moments later, I learn that he had to bury her after their arrival. Historical research, at times, can truly hurt.
What secrets does a pirate graveyard keep? What stories are buried in one of the world’s most famous pirate cemeteries on Sainte-Marie Island, Madagascar – once a major 17th–18th century pirate hideout?
Join us on Monday, 1 December, 1–2 pm CET on Zoom – and find out!
On Monday, the online lecture series SHIPS & SEAFARING 1500–1800, organized by the German Maritime Museum and the Prize Papers Project continues with another highlight.
We are delighted to welcome Jean Soulat, Director of the Archaeology of Piracy Research Program (Archéologie de la Piraterie) and researcher at the LandArc Laboratory, affiliated with the CNRS (UMR 6273 CRAHAM, University of Caen).
Jean Soulat will present one of his current projects, a study of a pirate lair on Sainte-Marie Island, Madagascar. Sainte-Marie was a favored hideout for pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries, and weathered gravestones on the island still bear witness to this turbulent past.

Was funktioniert wirklich im Schulalltag? Und wie gelingt der Einstieg?
Der Artikel gibt praktische Tipps und zeigt, wie Lernen mit Games Spaß machen und trotzdem fachlich tief gehen kann.
