I always loved drawing lines and writing words, so I co-founded a design consultancy, Brandient, to do just that, but better.

“Greek heroes who had to sail through siren-infested waters had an opsec protocol to keep themselves from being lured to their watery graves by the sirens’ irresistible songs: they would fill their ears with wax to create a firewall that was impenetrable by the sirens’ freespace acoustic network infiltration attempts.”

Is there **ANY** overlap between the RSS cohort and the Newsletter cohort? To me they look like different worlds.

@paul@tapbots.social They don’t perform well on Earth because they require lower gravity to prevent the wheels and body panels from detaching, and an environment devoid of water to avoid rusting or short-circuiting. Great on Mars though.

@GteI I loved and admired the progression of form and materials from iBook G3 to iMac G3 and Power Mac G3 — and the bold way the all-black PowerBook G3 cut through the colorful and happy lineup like an untamed predator, while honoring the curvy, organic visual style of the entire range. What a show of absolute design mastery. What a tsunami in the world of boxy beige anonymous machines.

@EUCommission Chat Control and indiscriminate mass surveillance is the opposite of digital freedom. Such surveillance tools will be inevitably weaponized by illiberal governments against opposition, press, activists, whistleblowers, etc.

@nazhamid I totally get your point, however, I can testify that for a non-native speaker the AI editing is a miracle that eases the pains and the shame of making mistakes and trying to express something via completely awkward expressions.

@kissane Thank you for your deeply insightful article and valuable work. Your thesis on digital foundation densification is truly enlightening, and many others — in different geographies — could and should follow your lead. Happy holidays!

“More than a million ChatGPT users each week send messages that include ‘explicit indicators of potential suicidal planning or intent’, according to a blogpost published by OpenAI.”

“In addition to its estimates on suicidal ideations and related interactions, OpenAI also said that about 0.07% of users active in a given week – about 560,000 of its touted 800m weekly users – show ‘possible signs of mental health emergencies related to psychosis or mania’.”

“When characters in Dick’s world yell at the TV, the TV sometimes yells right back. The speech modules of our personal devices don’t yell, but they are beginning to combine alert attention with dim-witted obsequiousness while profusely apologising for irretrievably wiping our database.”

“Philip K Dick died in 1982, mostly having failed to achieve significant literary appreciation. He was not a good writer for his time. But he is a great writer for ours.”

“Known as Google X until 2015, when it became a self-contained arm of the new holding company called Alphabet, it’s now just X. For clarity’s sake, it’s fond of calling itself “X, the Moonshot Factory”—definitely not to be confused with X, the Elon Musk-owned social network.”

Naming is hard.

Why does #macOS not sync through iCloud the general preferences that make a Mac feel like home—from obvious choices like Desktop and Dock settings, languages, keyboard, and trackpad configurations to subtler details such as the Connect to Server favorites list? Maybe even ask the user?

“Hugging Face’s team couldn’t use U.S. AI models for forensic analysis because safety guardrails blocked the cybersecurity commands needed for incident response.”

So an American company employed a Chinese model—because of American guardrails—to counter an American attacker that used a weaponized American model. Wow.

@mwichary@mastodon.online For a search engine, a text input box is a default option, which maybe is why people most often associate AI with search and use it accordingly. However, for almost everything else, it’s a terrible interface because it doesn’t present any affordances that help users discover its functionality. Maybe that’s why people have difficulty using it in other ways than a search tool.
