I volunteered to marshal at my local #parkrun since I'm running a 10k event tomorrow.

But I may have clapped for the participants too much. Pretty sure some of my fingers are now subluxing.

They feel like a bag of dice instead if a functional structure. Damn you, hEDS!

So, my #GreatManchesterRun 10k is done and dusted. Finished in 1 hour, 10 minutes and 24 seconds which is not my slowest ever 10k.

Now loafing on the sofa, watching the women's FA Cup final with a TENS machine on my arms. Because naturally, the sorest part of me after a run is my arms.

"Third Eye" wrapped up Ænima strongly - almost 14 minutes of empassioned religious ephiphany... or something. Now playing Lateralus from 2001. Starting off with "The Grudge" at over 8 and a half minutes. No actual criticism, but it doesn't speak to me the way other songs do.

Nimrod, from 1997. This one was more familiar to me. I don't think I owned the album when it came out but these songs got a lot more radio play than Insomniac did.

Normally, I do these listening sessions on days that I have a lot of grind to do at my desk. But today I have sole custody of the doggo, so I listened while on a walk with the pup. The dog is already wearing black, so i added a little tie (Billy Joe style) and posed her in front of our very own Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

Now, Insomniac from 1995. I don't remember it much which was probably a result of the media blackout. The songs all contain swear words, the music videos and album art hit pretty hard and the themes are much darker. I think it might need more of my attention.

Normally, I don't include live albums or compilation albums in my #AlbumParty listening sessions. But I am making an exception for Shennanigans from 2002 because 1) I like the name 2) I had no idea it existed 3) it seems to be mostly original music. Not sure why it is not counted as a regular album?

I don't know exactly why, but my arm is killing me today. So I set up Voice Access on my computer to reduce the amount of typing and mousing I do.
So far, it is interesting but quite a pfaff. For example, I had to manually correct these sentences. Also, it doesn't seem to recognise the names of many apps and switching between monitors is quite tricky.

So, that is another album that sounds fine. Quality stuff. No complaints. But I don't have any strong memories of these songs from formative periods of my life so they don't hook me the way earlier albums did. Nevertheless, I persist. Fear Inoculum from 2019. Probably won't finish this today so will pick it up again and share final thoughts on Monday.

"Jesus of Suburbia" is an absolute opera. I listened to it on a whole lot of walking commutes while I lived in the Netherlands. It felt so disconnected from the quaint row houses and canals that I was passing but it absolutely sounded right to me.

This is only the second album (unless you count extended play singles) and it is the first album with Tré Cool. That said, it sounds very distinctively Green Day. Also notable "Dominated Love Slave" is mockingly country, a bit remininscent of the less obviously mocking country song "Knowledge" from 1030/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. I remember Nor Cal being much more country than I think people might expect.

Time for another #AlbumParty! I'm starting off today with Hot Chip's 'Coming on Strong'. Wikipedia says it is from 2004 but Spotify says 2005.
I love this album and have heard it so many times. It was the soundtrack to one of my years in Barcelona.

Technically, I guess Opiate is an EP rather than an album but since there are not actually a huge number of Tool albums, I am going to include it.

Well. That wraps it up. I liked Saviours and will try to play it more often to embed their newer stuff. There is clearly a lot of development in the 30+ years that Green Day have been doing their thing. I liked them back in the early 90's. I like them now. I have carried them with me through a lot of change and I will continue to do so. Now off to see if I can watch a video of their Super Bowl performance.

Well. That was fast. As one might expect from an EP. I would say it was fine. The tracks were all solid and obviously sounded like Tool because of Maynard's voice. But only "Opiate" had the kind of rolling, discombobulating rhythms that I think of as a Tool song. Also, it was over 8 minutes. Classic Tool. Now onto Undertow from 1993.

Getting ready for the #GreatManchesterRun today. I'm doing the 10k, so have time still before I need to head to the start.
Decided to see if there is any coverage of the race. None on BBC (boo!), but there is a live stream of the finish line on YouTube.
I'll be on that live stream later today!

Well, that's everything for this Album Party. I enjoyed the tour of Tool's music. I read that they are considered 'progressive metal' which is not a thing I had heard of before. What I like most is that they seem to have a very clear articistic voice. They have videos, rhythms, themes, etc. that are interesting but not especially likely to be mass appeal. I like when people do things because they genuinely want to do them rather than because they feel they must.

OK. I'm skipping Demolicious (from 2014) as it is mostly alternative versions of songs from ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tre!. Now listening to Revolution Radio from 2016 instead. I don't think I know this album at all. I had just made an international move and was a bit dazzled by all the change. Hooray for learning new things!

"Brain Stem" and "Jaded" are pretty familiar to me. I can see the logic of putting them together as a single for promotion because they are both pretty short (typical of punk songs) with Jaded just 1 minute 30 seconds. But it is a real stylistic change within a "single song" which I see on later albums.

It is completely logical, but it strikes me that the lyrics and style of Green Day on this first album were so youthful. The songs are energetic and a bit frantic but they sing about being nervous of the future, of making decisions for the first time, about self determination and making a way in the world.

I don't think I have heard Kerplunk! as much as I have heard other Green Day albums. Hearing the songs doesn't remind me of places and times the way their first album did. That said, it will only be two albums for me today because I have some work to finish up and then a gig to get to tonight.

Well, the livestream on YouTube (unrelated to this AlbumParty) is done, so now I'm listening to Warning, from 2000. The sound is more acoustic, accessible, even ... folksy? But punk is about defying expectations and externally imposed boundaries so who says an acoustic guitar can't be punk?

They played "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" at my high school graduation. I kind of get it. The song is originally about a relationship breakup, so not the usual view of graduations as an achievement. But a graduation is also an ending, a beginning, a big change.

I don't think I had ever seen the video for "Prison Sex". According to Wikipedia, it was deemed too graphic and only played a few times. I suspect that is more about the lyrics (which cover CSA) making people uncomfortable than the video. The video has the creepy stop motion, distorted, mechanical figures that are in a lot of Tool's videos.

I think evyrone is now dealing with how the discomfort with CSA lead to not talking about it instead of doing anything to address it.

Now on to Ænima from 1996. Tool switched bassists before this album, apparently amicably. I think this album might be my favourite? I remember being FASCINATED by the lenticular album cover. I really enjoy the contrast between spoken or softly sung parts and crashing noise. The whole thing feels driven inexorably forward by really strong bass. There is also a mixing effect that makes it feel like the music is moving toward or away from you that I love.

I love this album, and not just because I played it on repeat in my formative years. Clearly, a lot of people love it because it went double diamond (20 x platinum ... apparently. Sold 20 million+ copies worldwide. Some silly lyrics, sure. But others are actually interesting takes on difficult topics.

Now playing "Sober" and watching the video. Same creepy stop motion, distorted figures video. It is fascinatingly ugly, presumably on purpose. I'd say they did a great job. This song, and also I guess the video. give me that horripilaton feeling. Love it.

The title track Ænima is so incredibly dynamic. It SOUNDS like movement. Is there a word for that? The closest I can think of is onomatopoeia, which is a word that sounds a bit like its meaning (e.g. words like whoosh or sizzle). Do you get what I mean? Or am I just being synaesthetic at you all?

I can't think of another example of a band releasing a song on one album and then re-releasing it on the next album. "Welcome to Paradise" is a pretty good song, so I can see why they want more people to hear it.
