Retired and living the (tech) life here in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, UK! I run a web server, but my pride and joy is my gopher server which gets fed fresh files practically every day. It's the past, kids, but more importantly, the future! Also interest in bread making, coffee, beer, wire fox terriers, MeshCore, paganism (pantheism rules)

@Tutanota@mastodon.social I must say that i'm really impressed with Tuta - I set up a Revolutionary account at the weekend and linked a domain to it. I'd say it was a straightforward, "calm" experience. 👍

Following on from the part couple of days of Rediscovering Perl, I was honestly surprised how much I'd forgotten after being retired for 3 years! 30+ years of getting paid to do #Perl every day, then .. nothing. Now I suddenly needed to hit the ground running again and found it challenging. The best bit though is that I saved nearly all the code I'd written and was able to instantly refer to working code :0080: I'm also really impressed that I can run all this stuff on small, portable devices - how times have changed!

@ambiguous_yelp @olivenolje @kde @Stem I agree. I believe one solution is to start/continue to design hardware that's generic enough to do the job. Think dune buggies which are bare-bones but can move around quickly. Bolt on accessories as needed. Perhaps bring the #Permacomputing crowd in? Framework Computer style?

UK: "Protect the children at ALL COSTS!"

ME ASKING FOR GUIDANCE: "Thank you for reaching out to the Professional Online Safety Helpline.

We greatly value your query and appreciate your patience during this time. We are currently operating at reduced capacity, which may result in longer response times than usual.

Please rest assured that your concern is important to us, and we will respond as soon as we can.

If you are contacting us with a serious safeguarding concern, please escalate this locally via your local authority"

It sucks! And what would my local authority know?!

'Morning tooters! Still battling with miserable weather thanks to British "Summer" Time, but I did find an interesting article on a solar power breakthrough: https://petergarner.net/notes.php?thisnote=20260401-Solar+Power+Breakthrough+in+Yorkshire.html

@tootapp@mastodon.social keeping the clock on screen is a great idea - it's really easy (for me) to lose track of time when I'm in "just one more game" mode!

@paninid @dianea Further thoughts .. I don't honestly know where to start with the "this bothers me immensely" scenario - that's an understatement obviously. As a boomer, I was brought up to believe that The Establishment, Queen and Country etc was honourable; yes, even MPs - otherwise how would they attain their privileged positions? But as you grow older, and more importantly, mass, near-instant communications arrived, The Establishment couldn't hide behind the facade of respectability, and we culminate in the Epstein Cesspit. I'm sure there are others too... As someone who's grown cynical over the years, you have to realise that my beliefs - nearly everything I was brought up to believe in - have been turned upside down, and there must be many, many others that feel the same. We're not victims in the same way that the real victims are, but the feeling of not knowing who to turn to, who to *trust* is deeply unsettling and bewildering. And just when you think it can't get worse, another turd surfaces 🤬

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the UK Government's Exercise Turnstone report? If we're going to get CO2-shortage induced food shortages it'd be helpful to know what we're up against!

@legoktm I'm really surprised that no-one has referenced Colossus - The Forbin Project. Made in 1970 it seems remarkably forward-thinking. Come to think of it, a lot of Sci-Fi from that era is becoming reality... https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064177
