How many people must be needlessly injured or die because Starfleet refuses to install seat belts on the bridge?

Don't look for a big price cut on the Apple Vision Pro. More likely a 128gb model for $2,999
Look for an Apple Vision for holiday 2024. Likely no cameras on the front, no 4k, 1080p using current Sony micro LED liquid retina or some new buzzword. Plastic, polycarbonate frame. No extra straps or charger. Runs the full catalog of vison pro apps. Starting at $1,999. We can't wait to see what you do with it.
You heard it here first.
After going through my closets and drawers, I found enough old Apple gear to trade in that brought the cost of a Vision Pro to just under $1k (yes, I had an awful lot of stuff laying around*). At that price, it's time to give it a go (or worst case, return it for a nice shiny new Mac). Any questions for a skeptic turned owner? Time to go down the rabbit hole.
*I also have a 20" G4 "Luxo" Mac brand new, sealed in box and a G4 Cube that weren't eligible for trade in.
@ianbetteridge@writing.exchange @gruber@mastodon.social @pmcg@mastodon.social @mikesax@mas.to the 128k Mac appealed to people like me who saw it as the next paradigm, bought one with every penny I could scrape up and didn’t regret it for a moment. I was someone who produced written words for school and most of my career. The cost was also amortized because others could use it like family and dorm mates. I just don’t feel the same about this. I’m still trying to justify the cost on my head and it doesn’t compute. 🤷
Apple Store was busy as usual but there was no wait for a demo (which I highly recommend, if nothing else, it's a free peek at what everyone's chattering about). There was plenty of stock available, lots of people interested salesperson told me, not many wanting to invest the full half hour, few purchases (although I suspect those who wanted did the pre-order).
So, expect some thoughts over the next few days. Not s review unit from Apple and PR was not involved in any way. For reference, here are my thoughts after the launch of AVP and all the reasons I'm skeptical, if not of the long term concept, but of this device and what it offers.

@ianbetteridge@writing.exchange @gruber@mastodon.social @pmcg@mastodon.social @mikesax@mas.to a gentle reminder the 128k Macintosh was a commercial flop, put Apple close to bankruptcy and sent Jobs into the diaspora of NeXT. Scully made it commercially viable, added memory, support for HDs and added arrow keys to the keyboard. In the age of social media it might have actually killed Apple. I don’t think comparing it to the 128k Macintosh is something Apple should talk about. It also had immediate use cases
It’s been three days in Kiryat Gate listening to the distant thunder of rockets landing. Women, children, the infirm are being slaughtered but this time in history those who perpetrated these acts will discover Jewish blood is not free & carries a steep cost.
@r_df_ng@mastodon.social isn't aged milk yogurt? Which is actually quite good. Making informed predictions is what I do, although the more specific the prediction, the greater likelihood it's wrong. I'd give this a 70/30 chance of being correct.
@Silbert@historians.social probably not. It's not working as Apple expected, it's a way of cutting cost and making the feature go away
"One thing I know from my years as a market researcher and my time working at Apple during the Jobs era, is that the vast majority of users won't pay money for flashy new tech that doesn't add something useful to their lives"

@r_df_ng@mastodon.social I'm pretty sure I'm not. Ask your basic iOS user how to setup standby with no guidance and there's no chance. Unless they stumble over if by mistake.
