They have Miles Morales Spider-Man plushies at the store where I work and I've witnessed little kids excitedly pick them up and there's something about that I find really heartening. Like, the fact that there's a new Marvel superhero kids are excited about, invented within my lifetime, propelled to ubiquity by an instant-classic movie adaptation.

In 2006 I really wanted an MSN Messenger account, cuz my older brother used it all the time, and my mum said "you can have one when you're 13"

And so 7 years later on my 13th birthday I finally downloaded it. Only problem was it was 2013 and there was nobody left to talk to on it. My mum had no memory of telling me to wait, and had no idea I'd been biding my time.

I have for about a decade used an image of Miru from the video game Pac & Pal as my profile pic over on Discord. And I am delighted to share that after 43 years, Miru has finally made her second ever new appearance in a piece of Pac-Man media, that being the new series of cartoon shorts "Pac-Man Snack Breaks."

9 and 10, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. My two childhood Doctors, I remember when they seemed the obvious pairing for a multi-Doctor as the only two New Who Doctors. Now, even though the pairing is highly unlikely to ever occur, it's still a nice dream. I hold out hopes that Big Finish can convince Eccleston to do it.

15th Doctor set! A Joy to the World variant of the one Ncuti mould we have felt inevitable since it was the one other repaint they could've done. Still a tad underwhelming in this context, when he's got other outfits I'd rather have as figures. The Mr. Ring-a-ding looks a little odd, I guess he's a bendy rubber figure which is a decent gimmick but I don't like figures in this range requiring stands, and the shape and proportions of the face doesn't really look right. A flat standee might've been a more screen-accurate inclusion. And he looks way too tall compared to the Doctor. But we've got a Dugga Doo! Again, don't like the stand, wish they'd put a weight in his ass or moulded the tail to be in contact with the ground as a balance. But woohoo lmao Dugga Doo action figure! But I'm probably not gonna get the set just for him. Wish he was in a set I could better justify getting. 5/10

@nikink@aus.social I would second gifting it to someone young who'd be thrilled to have them. Some thoughts in terms of making him some cash: •Facebook Marketplace can sometimes work out, fairly easy to set up a listing, but I've had several bad experiences dealing with people on there, I find it attracts a bad crowd. •Selling on eBay can be good for getting the best price, and generally attracts a less pushy/rude crowd of buyers, but it can also be a hassle to set up and to mail them off. •A pawn shop that sells toys/collectibles would be minimal hassle and quick, but would probably be on the low end in terms of the price he'd get.

3 and the Fugitive Doctor, Jon Pertwee and Jo Martin. Where the Fugitive Doctor is so headstrong and bossy, as is 3, I feel like they would butt heads a lot in a way that would be very fun to watch, in the same way 2 and 3 bickering is. And having Jo Martin specifically compete with his authority I feel would act as a nice counterbalance to the occasionally chauvinistic energy of that era. Plus, I think she'd be a great fit for the 70s UNIT setting. Maybe the Brig would find her Division operative attitude refreshing, and annoy 3 by preferring this new action-y version of the Doctor.

Okay here's my pairings: first up, 1 and 4, William Hartnell and Tom Baker. The most iconic Doctor with the first feels right. And most of Tom Baker's multi-Doctors, like Out of time with Tennant and the Curator scene with Smith, position him as the senior Doctor, so it'd be fun to see him paired with the most senior of Doctors.

5 and 13, Peter Davison and Jodie Whittaker. I think Davison's cool and collected Doctor would make a good contrast with 13's bubbly energy. And picturing them together, I think it'd be a lot of fun. Maybe they'd each bring their fams along, for a whopping 6 companions in the Tardis!

I think if they had to do another Tom Baker figure, I would rank above this one •Real old man Tom from the end of the Shada reconstruction, even if it's just the Curator figure headsculpt plopped onto a pre-existing 4th Doctor body, that Curator figure hasn't been re-issued. •Fake old man Tom from Leisure Hive, with the beard. •A previous 4th Doctor sculpt repainted in the colour palette of his Marvel comic covers, packaged with a blue Beep the Meep repaint.

4th Doctor set! Oh no that new hatted face sculpt looks awful. That's a shame. Fabric scarf is, again, not a terrible gimmick, I tend to like fabric clothing items on action figures. But it doesn't exactly look better than the rubber scarfs they were doing before. And I don't really know why they've made this figure, he feels very unnecessary. 2/10

And finally, 14 and the Shalka Doctor, David Tennant and Richard E. Grant. I don't know if this is a perfect pairing, I don't know what their dynamic is going to be like. I also considered Grant with McGann, to recapture their Withnail and I chemistry, or with Gatwa, to explore the Shalka Doctor canon mystery within the era where it was established. But there's a nice feeling of continuity in having the 14th Doctor discover this missing incarnation they didn't know about before, so that he can be introduced as the 9th Doctor and Tennant can go "What?? WHAT??? What." and so it makes sense that 15 is unperturbed when that face comes up in Rogue, having just met that Doctor a short while before.

@f4rr3r@sunny.garden I think it's a delicate issue. Cuz on one hand, working in the entertainment industry online and independently is a valid career path now, and there's an argument to be made that that's a better way for it to exist than as something gatekept by wealthy executives. But on the other, I know that chasing the algorithm is gambling. Hard work isn't invariably rewarded, and success does not guarantee any kind of stable income. I see so much desperation on YouTube, people releasing something that underperforms and then changing the title and thumbnail over and over hoping that the stars will align and the algorithm will reward them for their efforts. It's not about impressing the right people or finding your audience, it's just about pleasing a machine that has no accountability and that we know rewards the worst impulses. The machine can decide you're not successful because you're black or gay, and it can decide you are successful because you're racist or homophobic, because it's just an algorithm, it just shows people what it thinks will get clicks, and the billionaires who control it are under no pressure to reveal their influence over it. So now instead of wealthy entertainment industry executive gatekeepers, there are wealthy social media executive gatekeepers who get the entertainment without any need for properly waged or contracted employees. They just extract the entertainment from us with a machine, and then use that machine to feed it back to us, and try their damnedest to get us addicted to using it. I was lucky to have parents who didn't ever encourage "being famous" just for the sake of it as a desirable aspiration. I feel like I would be the same if I had a kid who wanted to be an influencer. I *would* encourage creating and performing, but not a desire for fame, and certainly not algorithmically generated fame.

@nikink@aus.social Right, okay! Well, eBay's good for checking the value of these things. Could scroll here for a bit to get a sense of what collections of a similar size sell for together (but basically, they are worth something!): https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_nkw=star+wars+kenner+figure+lot&_sacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313 (and knowing that Kenner is the company that made the figures from the 70s through to the 90s might be a help for doing that kind of research!) Are there any flea markets/swap meets/car boot sales/yard sale days where he might be able to sell them? Or any businesses/malls with community pinboards where he could put a printed out ad flyer for people to reach out to him?
