mastodon 4.8.0-nightly.2026-10-06A fan of a certain age, or a greying geek if you will. I grew up with and still love old-school Sci-Fi and Telefantasy from the 1960s and '70s (some of that newfangled '80s stuff too). I'd rather we were friends than followers.

Good luck to the Artemis II crew.

My wife once won Michael Keating in a raffle. Not a photo or something—the actual Michael Keating. It was in the late 1980s, and we got to go out for a meal with him before enjoying his performance on stage in Noises Off.
When we met him, he looked a little wary, perhaps thinking that being sci-fi fans we might be complete nutters. However, we seemed to pass muster and he quickly warmed up to us. And what a charming, witty, and thoroughly delightful fellow he was. R.I.P.
Very sorry to hear that David Burke has passed away. Playing opposite the definitive Sherlock Holmes of Jeremy Brett, Burke helped redefine Dr. Watson away from the bungling-oaf caricature the character had previously become. His successor in the role, Edward Hardwicke, continued that trajectory beautifully.
Away from Baker Street, I also very much enjoyed Burke’s performance as the elderly butler Patten in A View from a Hill.

Happy Birthday to George Takei and Louise Jameson.
Sulu and Leela. Oh my, what a multidimensional adventure that would be!

I hate it when my page starts looking like an obituary column, but I'm very sorry to hear that Jill Curzon has passed away. Fans of the Peter Cushing Dalek movies will remember her as Louise in Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.

Five is 75 today…
Happy birthday to Peter Davison, the Fifth Doctor.
Here he is being profiled in Buddy comic back in 1982.
It's too hot outdoors...
...and it's too hot indoors. Basically, I'm melting.
Even as a kid, some things just looked wrong. Case in point: this TARDIS Commander badge. It was originally merchandise for the 1972 BBC TV Visual Effects exhibition at the Science Museum in London, but they must have had plenty left over, because they were still available to buy at the Doctor Who exhibition in Blackpool a couple of years later.

Apparently it's #WorldPenguinDay so...

ALTHEA
Look, why don't you let me tell
the Captain that you didn't mean
what you said and that you
won't mention it again.
TONY
I can't promise that, Althea. Not
when I know what's going to happen.
ALTHEA
You don't know! Nobody knows. You can't!
Many happy returns to Susan Hampshire, Althea Hall in the pilot episode of The Time Tunnel, "Rendezvous with Yesterday".

Happy 88th birthday to Roy Thinnes, former fighter of invading aliens and part-time architect (though I don’t recall David Vincent stopping to do much architectural work).
Thinnes also starred in The Norliss Tapes (one of the best TV pilots never to make it to series), played Roger Collins in the short-lived Dark Shadows revival, and was a contender for the role of Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, though he lost out on that particular gig to some English bloke.
Vargan turns out to be a time traveller from the far future, his “coffin” a cryo-pod that preserved him. Each night, he leaves it to siphon life force from the villagers. The Time Tunnel finally sends him back to face justice in his own time—2026, would you believe?
Replying to
@IanAMartin@thecanadian.social LOL, yes.
I’ve heard the spaceship referred to as both Icarus and Liberty 1, though neither name is actually used in the film itself. Icarus seems to be a fan invention, while Liberty 1 turned up in a special feature on the 2008 Blu-ray box set.
Liberty 1 has a certain irony given the film’s ending, but I can just as easily imagine the ever-cynical Taylor nicknaming his ship Icarus.

THE (JOHN) DRAKE EQUATION
“ARE NUMBER SIX AND JOHN DRAKE THE SAME MAN?” Of all the frequently asked questions regarding The Prisoner, this is the most contentious. Patrick McGoohan, creator of the series and the man who played both characters, said no — but some fans refuse to believe him. Let’s look at the case for and against. WHY DID YOU RESIGN? By 1966, Patrick McGoohan was reportedly the highest-paid actor on British television, and his hit series…

We might associate The Addams Family more with Halloween, but the original television series did have a Christmas episode. Christmas with the Addams Family aired 24th December, 1965.
