Mostly I make movies but I also help with my wife's handblown glass business:

Daniel Bekerman
mastodon 4.7.3Movie Producer "The Apprentice", "The VVitch", "Endless Cookie", feeling many positive and negative things about future of tech and storytelling and eager to kvetch about it. Op-Ed I wrote about Trump's secret weapon:

On the left is the Claude logo/cursor
On the left is Kurt Vonnegut's drawing of an anus
I asked Claude about the similarity and it got very robo-defensive.
I've spent a lot of my adult life on roads like this. Forestry in my 20s, many movies filmed down some bumpy rainy road. Last night going from basecamp to set, drivers wondered why I was walking instead of taking shuttles. The answer is, I thought, I feel pretty at home here.
I took this picture in 2020 just before things started shutting down. Light and Dark.
When we premiered "The Apprentice" at Cannes, Donald Trump immediately threatened to sue any distributor who would dare try and bring the movie to audiences. I witnessed the entire industry bowing down to him. Now, the biggest entertainment companies are fusing with political power to the point of being indistinguishable. Trump understands that we all live our lives by the stories we attach our identities to. That is how he is able to defy political gravity.

as @Casey@theforkiverse.com and @kevin@theforkiverse.com pointed out, the fact that one company is the only apparent resistance to a race to autonomous weapons and mass surveillance, the real headline should be governance failure.
I do actually admire Anthropic's stance here. But I think we should have all learned over the last five years that we cannot rely on the "ethical positioning" of giant corporations, which have flailed from wildly woke to enthusiastic boot lickers.

Good conversation with Anton Korinek @Casey@theforkiverse.com and @kevin@theforkiverse.com. One phrase he used stuck with me: "IN THE EYES OF AI..." then he went on to explain that many aspects of AI growth will not show up in the GDP metrics. I think that wording opens up a tough reality that is currently being swept under the economic rug. Who's eyes are we looking through when we measure? The math elephant in the room: How can AI drive growth to 10X if the humans who buy stuff no longer have income to buy stuff with?
Doing a new movie with Dylan and Hudson from Heated Rivalry, it should be a fun one!
