Just stumbled upon @scottjenson@social.coop Ubuntu Summit talk: “Are we stuck with the same Desktop UX forever?”

I've used FOSS/Ubuntu for ~20 years. I love the philosophy but honestly often struggle with the UX.

That's why this talk is stunning. Scott brings 40+ years of experience (Apple System 7, Newton, Google Android) to show how FOSS design can finally evolve.

Packed with insights, memes, and hope for the Linux desktop.

Highly recommended! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fZTOjd_bOQ

People pay enormous amounts for iOS apps that are already available as FOSS on Android. Looking for alternatives (European if possible): ∙ Cofi (github.com/rozPierog/Cofi) ∙ News app alt to Google News (trying Feeeed, not convinced) 2/4

More I’m looking for: ∙ Camera app without processing ∙ Moving away from Gmail – privacy concerns + Gmailify shutdown. Using Apple Mail, Proton & domain mail, but all lack comfort ∙ Punctuation on Apple keyboard without hitting 123? No Gboard. 3/4

I’ll expand this list soon. Right now switching from Android to iOS feels like a constant need to bend around corners and work against my phone. Suggestions welcome! 🙏 4/4

Promoting European or decentralized platforms would not only strengthen our digital sovereignty and resilience, but also empower users with more diverse and privacy-respecting options. Thank you for your attention to this matter. 🇪🇺 2/2

Just realized my favorite Mastodon client, Megalodon, is deprecated, and @openvibe@mastodon.social won't start anymore. I've switched back to the OG Mastodon app for now.

But what are your recommendations in late 2025?
@moshidon@floss.social looks nice.

Does the willingness to pay more for expanded project scopes decreased or increased in parallel? How has the overall payment morale evolved in recent years?

How come you’ve been able to adjust the OS’s accent color in macOS since like forever, but still can’t on iOS?

A Designer’s Guide To Eco-Friendly Interfaces — Smashing Magazine

Every high-resolution hero image, autoplay video, and complex JavaScript animation carries a cost. Sustainable UX challenges the era of “unlimited pixels” and reframes performance as responsibility. In 2026, truly sophisticated design is defined not by how much it adds, but by how thoughtfully it reduces its footprint.

@fheinderyckx@mastodon.social I just hope they'll finally fix the image handling in general. No more cut-off images, no more squashed og-/twitter-images, etc.
