Prof at UniMelb. I'm a computational cognitive scientist studying and modelling human inference, learning, dynamic information systems, culture, and (mis/dis)info. Nerd & opinionated loudmouth in Oz, originally from America, citizen of both. Parent of two. General weirdo. Ted Lasso is my hero. he/him 🏳️‍⚧️

In general I will follow people back unless their profile contains no info :) I also love boosting nature photos as long as they have alt text!

How to slow down scientific progress

"Leo Szilard—the physicist who first conceived of the nuclear chain reaction and who urged the US to undertake the Manhattan Project—also wrote fiction. His book of short stories, The Voice of the Dolphins, contains a story “The Mark Gable Foundation,” dated 1948."

You can see the full thing at this link, but I've also taken a screenshot of an excerpt. 😬 🤔 😢

I'm very proud to have been a part of this paper written with @celestekidd@universeodon.com and @spiantado@mastodon.social. It is a short summary of why it is just wrong, given what we know about the cognitive science of concepts, to think that biological sex is the only "scientific" way to define man/woman.

This week I've been loving sending people emails that say "don't worry about this till January" because it makes me look nice while also getting stuff off my desk and onto theirs 😂

@libroraptor@mastodon.nz @georgemsavva@genart.social @celestekidd@universeodon.com @spiantado@mastodon.social I actually didn't even realise that the publisher's url didn't work for everyone! Otherwise I do try always to do that, because I agree with you -- this stuff should be all open.

Replying to
@augustusvalentinus@rollenspiel.social I'm becoming more and more convinced that the grant process is a terrible drain on science. Solidarity.

@jfa@sciencemastodon.com Luckily, I think this is an exaggerated and distorted picture of how it really is (at least in my end of the world and experience). But exaggerated and distorted doesn't mean entirely inaccurate -- just that it's not that bad, yet. I can see the trendlnes though.

@badri@scholar.social If you didn't see it, someone in the thread linked to a pdf of the whole story. It's good! Totally bizarre though :)

Replying to
@sqrtminusone@fosstodon.org Well, it's fiction... (But also, a plausible case can be made that this vignette illustrates a lot of what is wrong with science now. The question isn't "has progress been made in an absolute sense" but rather "how does this compare to what it could be")
