Yes you can carry your grave stone, if you really wanna! It will return a 1up, but it sure is heavy! 🐸

@duke_of_germany@mastodon.gamedev.place Well I can understand that. I have also made more than one game engine in different programming languages. But I also like to try different methods / design patterns to see how well they work. Definitely a good way of improving.
But I would also say that I don't think there ever is a perfect method. Only different ways, with different pros and cons. I guess in some ways, developers can be like perfectionist artists who never finish a drawing 😀

@britown@mastodon.gamedev.place Thank you! I was actually a little disappointed with it at first since I wanted it to be more asymmetrical. But I am finding that symmetry seems to work best at this small 8x8 tile size 😀

@duke_of_germany@mastodon.gamedev.place That's very interesting! Your adventure engine sounds similar to mine technology wise. Is it specifically for point and click adventure games? Or is it more general?
Also are you using a Graphics API like OpenGL, DirectX, etc? Although SDL is capable of doing the rendering. Sorry for all the questions, no need to answer if you do not want to 😀

@EscGoat@mastodon.social Thank you! I kind of panicked towards the end when there were two snakes coming from both the left and right 😅

@duke_of_germany@mastodon.gamedev.place Thank you! The fireballs can be used by the dragon to destroy the tails of the snake. The dragon can grow by eating food or hitting snake tails with fireballs.
I did experiment at the start and let the fireballs hit any part of the snake, to make the snake shrink. But as you can imagine, this was very over powered for the dragon! Hitting the tails is definitely more challenging and adds more options for growth 😀

@duke_of_germany@mastodon.gamedev.place Reusability makes sense. I imagine SDL should be fine for rendering a point and click adventure game. But why don't you make the adventure game in the C# engine?
I use SDL for pretty much everything (except rendering): input (keyboard, gamepad), sound, timekeeping, window creation etc.
OpenGL is used for fast rendering. I have a sprite batcher for example which can render many of the same sprite cheaply performance wise. For example the tiles and the snake segments.

@ngaylinn@tech.lgbt Thank you, I am using a node graph instead of a grid to cut down on the number of nodes for performance reasons. Since I will potentially support larger maps, and even more snakes. The nodes are hand placed atm. The snake searches for nodes in front of it to pathfind from, since it's not usually good for the snake to do 180 turns. It tends to get into trouble then 😀
