At 51, she’s still in the final at floor exercise: legendary gymnast Oksana Chusovitina's performance | Video She is 51 years old, but watching the video of her tumbling vault performance, her birthdate seems almost an error. Oksana Chusovitina runs, strides, flies, and lands reasonably well enough to compete with gymnasts who could be her daughters. On Tuesday, at the Asian Games in Nagoya, the Uzbek legend scored 13.266 points, fourth-highest score in qualifying, thus securing a spot in today’s tumbling final. It isn't a veteran competition or a celebratory exhibition. Chusovitina is still among the best on the continent, competing for a medal. Only the South Korean Yeo Seo-jeong (14.466), the North Korean An Chang-ok (13.900), and the Chinese Du Siyu (13.433) were ahead of her in qualifying. Her career, after all, seems to belong to another time scale. Chusovitina won her first Olympic gold medal at Barcelona 1992, in the team event with the Commonwealth of Independent States, just a few months after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Since then, she has participated in eight Olympics, an absolute record among gymnasts: from Barcelona to Tokyo 2020. At Beijing 2008, she also won silver individually on the vault, that time wearing the German jersey. Behind that change of allegiance was a family story. In 2002, her son Alisher became ill with leukemia and Chusovitina moved to Germany to allow him to receive adequate treatment. She obtained citizenship in 2006 and competed for the German national team until 2012. Then, once her son recovered, she returned to represent Uzbekistan. “If my son hadn’t been sick, I would never have left,” she said. At the Asian Games, she has already won eight medals, including two golds, while at the World Championships she has been three-time champion and collected nine individual gold medals on the vault. Now, more than 34 years after Barcelona, Chusovitina is still on the floor. And not just to be there: at 51 years old, she is still competitive enough to try to get on a podium internationally. Recent travels started with my wife's home city of Nagoya, going to a Buddhist temple ceremony with my mother-in-law. The first photo shows the pagoda of Nittaiji (日泰寺), which means Japan-Thailand Temple, with a giant lotus. The second photo is of Nagoya Port Another trip was staying at two hotels in Kyōto, which wasn't necessary because we live nearby, but my wife and her Nagoya friend wanted to enjoy the amenities and talk. I see a possible new trend, since the last 3 hotels we've stayed at had times for various free snacks and drinks, so we didn't need to eat out after the breakfast buffet. It is surprising because the hotels were inexpensive and food and alcohol are relatively expensive. The third photo, from our hotel roof, shows the pagoda of Tōji (東寺) with Shinkansen trains running in front of it. At the Shintō shrine Imamiya Jinja (今宮神社), my wife's friends wanted to eat the sweet mochi shown in the fourth photo. #Japan #Nagoya #Kyoto #religion #hotels #photography
