#OnlineEvent - #Aotearoa / #NewZealand - Why can't I fix my washing machine? 15 Sept 2026, 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm "How New Zealanders are getting a bad deal on repair – and what the UK shows is possible. When a washing machine fails, dirty laundry piles up while owners wait weeks for an authorised repairer. Even simple faults can become expensive repairs once call-out fees and labour charges are added. Yet many common repairs are straightforward. Replacing a door gasket, detergent hose or drain pump doesn't require specialist qualifications – just basic tools, practical skills, and access to the right information and parts. So why is repair support so difficult to access? We investigated ten popular washing machine brands in New Zealand, grading each manufacturer on whether owners can access repair manuals and purchase spare parts. We found a pattern of barriers that prevent owners from carrying out simple repairs themselves. Then we repeated the investigation in the UK using the same manufacturers. The results were dramatically different. Many brands that restrict repair support in New Zealand provide UK consumers with detailed manuals, online parts catalogues, stock availability and direct ordering. The barriers to repair are not technical or logistical. Manufacturers already have the systems needed to support repair – they simply choose not to make them available to New Zealand consumers. The webinar will be recorded and shared with registered participants." #HintonburgON - #Ottawa #TransLibrary "The Ottawa Trans Library is a library and community space for trans and gender non-conforming folks. It consists of a lending library on #trans and #GenderIssues and by trans and #GenderDiverse authors and a small #OttawaTransArchives. Visit the OTL at 1104 Somerset St. West in Hintonburg. Hours are: Saturday 12 pm to 5pm Monday, and Thursday 3 pm to 7 pm Wednesday 12 pm to 5 pm In addition to regular hours, the OTL holds events at other times. For complete info, visit the library site at https://ottawatranslibrary.ca/ You can also check out the front page appearance in the Ottawa Citizen. The lending library consists of books by trans authors, as well as historical, important and interesting works on trans issues and people. I am also interested in acquiring transphobic titles. If you have a collection of trans books or periodicals gathering dust in your basement that you would consider #deaccessioning (that’s a respectful term for 'getting rid of'), please get in touch with me. We will also be building the collection through purchase. The library has four separate sitting areas, a free coffee and tea station and free WiFi, of course. You don’t need to borrow a book. Meet your friends or talk to the librarian. A safe space with no pressure or judgments. There is only one rule: be respectful of others." Here's your reminder to go and join your local library if you're able. Libraries provide so much more than books, and are such an important part of a community. Especially these days, it's essential to support them, and the librarians, library assistants etc that work there(so many of which are leftist, genuinely kind, helpful and caring). #jointhelibrary #libraries #librarians #librariansofmastodon #librariesrule #librariesareawesome #antifa #fightfascism #booksareessential #BooksAreMagic
