At least 358 human rights defenders were killed last year, according to a report released last week by Front Line Defenders, a Dublin-based group that provides support for global human rights activists. Nearly a quarter, 84, were targeted because of their often unpaid work protecting land and the environment. Those killings were documented in #Brazil, #Colombia, #Ecuador, #France, #Honduras, #Guatemala, #Mexico, #India, #Indonesia, #Peru, #Philippines, #Turkey, #Somalia and #Palestine. Indigenous-rights defenders—often working on environmental issues but tracked separately from environmental defenders—accounted for another 17 percent of the killings documented by the group. There were nearly 4,000 non-lethal attacks on #humanrights defenders across 119 countries last year, a figure that includes multiple violations against the same individual in some cases, according to the report. https://insideclimatenews.org/news/22062026/environmental-defenders-are-increasingly-targeted/ Because it's not mentioned in the article: these attacks are part of the #classwar declared by the bourgeoisie against the social majority.

European law against deforestation: a risk for coffee producers in Honduras. Coffee in Honduran Industry Coffee represents one of Honduras’s most important exports, with half of the production going directly to the European Union. Starting in 2027, stricter rules regarding the supply chain will come into effect, aimed at combating deforestation. However, the country’s fragile institutions, a fragmented coffee sector, and competing traceability platforms risk hindering the industry’s adaptation to these new regulations. Some exporters see the EU’s regulations as an opportunity to strengthen and reorganize their supply chains, while small farmers hope to be able to market the quality of their coffee to obtain more favorable prices. However, there are criticisms regarding the additional costs that producers will have to bear, who do not always guarantee a premium price, pushing them to consider markets with less onerous requirements.
