Il generale dell’esercito di Cuba ed ex presidente Raul Castro è in condizioni gravissime. Secondo quanto riporta Diario Las Americas sarebbe stato colpito da un ictus. Proprio nei giorni scorsi si erano diffuse voci su un suo possibile decesso. Raul è il più giovane dei fratelli Castro e lo scorso giugno ha compiuto 95 anni. Nell’aprile del 2021, il quotidiano spagnolo ABC aveva rivelato che soffriva di cancro all’esofago e al retto. Sempre lo stesso articolo affermava che soffriva di una grave cirrosi epatica per un abuso eccessivo di alcol.
A metà agosto era apparso in pubblico per la prima volta dopo mesi partecipando a uno degli eventi organizzati dal governo per il centenario della nascita di suo fratello Fidel. Il capo delle forze armate si era presentato in uniforme a una conferenza al Teatro Karl Marx de L’Avana. Ma non si vedeva da giugno e la sua assenza alla commemorazione per il 73esimo anniversario della Rivoluzione il 26 luglio aveva aggravato le voci sul suo stato di salute: l’ex presidente non era mai mancato fino a quel momento.
A fine maggio scorso, Castro e altre cinque persone sono state incriminate da un gran jury della Florida. Stando a quanto avevano riportato Fox e Cbs, le accuse riguardavano l’abbattimento di due aerei civili vicino alle coste cubane nel 1996. I due velivoli appartenevano a un’organizzazione di volontari con sede a Miami e l’incidente causò la morte di 3 cittadini americani.

General of the Cuban Army and former President Raúl Castro is in grave condition. According to Diario Las Américas, he suffered a stroke. Just days prior, rumors had spread about his possible death. Raúl is the youngest of the Castro brothers and last June he turned 95 years old. In April 2021, the Spanish newspaper ABC revealed that he was suffering from esophageal and rectal cancer, as well as severe hepatic cirrhosis due to excessive alcohol abuse. He had not been seen in public for the first time since months after participating in one of the events organized by the government for the centennial of his brother Fidel’s birth, at mid-August. The head of the armed forces appeared in uniform at a conference at the Karl Marx Theater in Havana. But he hadn't been seen since June and his absence from the commemoration of the 73rd anniversary of the Revolution on July 26th had fueled rumors about his health: the former president had never missed it until then. At the end of May last year, Castro and another five people were indicted by a grand jury in Florida. According to Fox and CBS reports, the charges concerned the downing of two civilian aircraft near the Cuban coast in 1996. The two aircraft belonged to a Miami-based volunteer organization and the incident caused the death of three American citizens.
