Reminds me of a codebase I used to work on which we had 899 variable limit and we couldn’t name them, only number them. These were limitations of the language. Each variable had to be assigned a 3 digit number but 1-100 were taken by internal stuff so only 101- 999 was allowed. So let’s say you wanted to check if power was between 50 and 60 you would end up with like #301 = 50; #302 = 60; #303 = powerSignal; If #303 < #301 || #303 > #302: Display error Continue process

Basically we made devices which were surgically implanted into your body to send specific electrical signals to your spine and brain for certain medical issues. The electronics were in a metal case so your icky blood and bodily fluids didn’t cause shorts. This system was to weld the metal case closed.

It was g-code which as another commentator correctly pointed out was used to control a fanuc cnc system.

It’s fanuc cnc… Incredibly useful and precise but OLD! They literally still support programs from bubble tape if you need. It was basically hardware constrained initially but fixing it would break backwards compatibility which is a super selling point for them to government and long term industries. Their controllers are mad expensive (budget version is like 30k last I checked), their support is top notch(tech typically on site within 24 hours with every possible board which may be bad so they can get you running and charge you later), they are incredibly precise and can do things other systems legally can not(a trainer I knew said “if you can move in 5 dimensions at once you can do some interesting things with nuclear energy so those require special clearance to sell”). Basically if you need them you NEED them, if you don’t then you don’t.

Lol, yup. Actually it was 4 axis. And connected to a laser instead of a milling bit. The system was also in a controlled gas environment which added extra complications.

Ok yes sauces have calories but who really counts the sauce calories if you are already eating chicken nuggets? Like if you are eating a salad and count the dressing, maybe but the intersection of calorie counting people and chicken nugget eating people can’t be very much

It was mostly just the naming that caused my frustration. I tried to declare all variables at start, had that section printed out and hung on my cubicle wall.

I don’t know, I only had 1 experience (small-ish explosion causing temporary hearing damage and temporary back pain). I had multiple witnesses, approved procedure by ehs rep and video evidence of adhering to procedure. Co-worker tried to “help” and caused it. Never even saw a bill or got a single call for money. I think it may just vary by company.

If you really did this at work, make sure they know and report. Then you can get medical care on their dime. I’m only 40 but my body feels like I’m 80. I moved apartments 2 years ago, 3rd floor to 3rd floor. I literally almost died, my chest was pounding I couldn’t stand I was struggling to breath. I ended up laying on the floor for about an hour, being wiped with wet washcloths to stay cool and trying to drink plenty of water. Take care of your body, mine is too late but hopefully you still have time.

I just moved just outside a major city in Texas. Me and my roommate decided to explore the city so we drove downtown, parked and just started walking around. We walked past a train station and there were people openly smoking weed wondering around the train station. This was in 2015, way before any weed legalization and it's still illegal in Texas. Now I don't care about people smoking weed, most are nice and at most will just ask if you have money, have weed, or are looking to buy weed. I don't even care if you do other drugs as long as you can handle it, know your limit and stay within it. What bothered me is across the street there were two police cars just watching. Standing out of their cars just watching. That means they didn't care about the low level weed crimes. They were there incase something larger went off. They were there in case of stabbings, shootings, mugging etc. I got out of there ASAP and never went back

Years ago when I was living with my parents, my mother was at work, I worked nights. She called me during the day and this was the conversation : Mom: I need a favor, go into my bedroom, get my cell phone and bring it to me. Me : you are are work right? Mom: yeah Me: you can't make personal calls at work so you must be on break right? Mom: what? Just bring me my phone! Me: if you are on break, how are you calling me? Mom: oh shit, nevermind I found it.

Ouch! Tell her I'm sorry, and I'm sorry for you too. All the accountants I worked with did alot more than just reports. Not to mention that sounds great until the Ai says 2+4 =2*4 and now the company owes 20 billion on taxes... Plus in a lot of cases people don't submit records in identical format, the number of excel workbooks I've seen where the data was on "sheet 2" for some unknown reason.... Maybe its just me, I always provided raw data on sheet 1, analyzed data on sheet 2, and if needed complicated formulas on sheet 3. I would be willing to bet their Ai would break on that format.

Seems systemic... Spend trillions every year and never win a war since desert storm or ww2 before that. It's not budget, it's not man power either the military are doing something really poorly or there is some type of corruption somewhere taking that money...

I mean I’m not a fan of Ai but that kinda makes sense to prevent expensive loops. An example being I know Google gemini has(and has had for several versions) a bug where it can get stuck repeatedly reading a file. I saw a video from a YouTuber which got stuck in this loop, it cost him 183 dollars in 40 minutes. What if he started it and then went home on a Friday evening? I just did a quick calculation based on it running 5pm Friday till 9am Monday and it would cost $17, 568 setting a limit to prevent this type of issue makes sense. Fun fact, by random chance there’s exactly 96 intervals of 40 minutes over that time frame.

That doesn’t follow the pattern… We skipped a and started with beans… Skipped c and went with deans… We need to skip e and meme feans then skip g and meme heans… At last skip ieans and we get to jeans. After that we skip K and meme leans. Now from a quick search feans and heans are not real words which means before we can advance we need to define them. Anyone have any good ideas for definitions of feans and or heans?

They are right. Most machines require some sort of rotational action and as such need transmissions. Also machines get commands either wired or wireless typically which both are another type of transmission. If we don’t have the rights to transmissions neither of those are viable and will make machines much harder. That’s what the post was about right? /s yes I know it’s referencing Trans rights as in rights for transsexuals. I was just having fun playing with the words.
