I moved long ago away from this wonderful server, which I adore.
I am performing some deletion tasks and backing up a few things before deleting this account.
If you're looking for me, you should likely follow @veronica@explains.social.
For shame, WIRED. For shame.
I *loathe* when websites will let me set a 32-64 character password, but then won't let me sign in because the password *exceeds* the requirements.
It screams "nobody considered password managers when designing this", which is alarming coming from a tech publication.
...is good enough, is computer programming, and I don't care if you disagree.
New game: every time someone tells me to switch Linux distros, I'm going to install Windows on another laptop.
I think that speaks to a broader truth about the Fediverse that folks on corporate social media keep missing: engagement is *a lot more* than numbers.
Yeah, by the numbers, I probably had more followers on Twitter compared with the Fediverse. And I certainly have more subscribers on YouTube.
But you all *engage* at a much higher rate than on corporate, algorithm driven social media. I don't know why more tech personalities don't see it that way. It's a win for all of us.
Conducted that poll about blogs vs email on YouTube.
Results about the same, slightly higher number of respondents liked email when compared against the fediverse.
First 100 or so respondents on YouTube make me think that this opinion isn't limited to just the fediverse.
Let's settle this. Once and for all. Incredibly scientific poll. Only one can win.
Blogs vs email newsletters:
I love the Fediverse. Good job, folks. Thanks for being here.
New outro stinger, now with Futura. I love this typeface.
Re: my last video, about the cartridge reader.
I'm getting a swell of comments telling me I'm foolish for wanting to make my own ROM files.
My response:
1. You obviously didn't watch the video all the way through, and
2. Learning to do a thing on your own is never a foolish endeavour.
For real, folks. We've all collectively grown accustomed to social media that mines *us* as payment, and that's not how it works here.
If you find value in this space, and you have the means, you should very much reach out to your administrator team and ask them how you can help, financially.
Companies/governments/media: stop relying on Twitter. Your posts are not accessible.
There's nothing wrong with enjoying GNOME.
Anyone who tells you otherwise is incorrect, is likely trying to gatekeep you out of the Linux world, and should generally be disregarded.
I haven't used a search engine in two weeks.
The biggest thing I'd like to report is the joy in remembering a useful URL and navigating to it right away. I missed that from the pre-search engine days.
If you know anyone with an awesome /links page, I'd like to see it. Might feature it in a future video.
Something like "website(dot)site(slash)links", that points to *other* people's websites (i.e. not "a bunch of places to find me", or a linktree with all of your projects).
We used to have spaces on our websites that pointed to our friends' websites. Beyond webrings, the /links page was a dedicated, curated place to share who inspires *you*.
I want to see examples of them nowadays.
