$10 for a gallon of gas has red Alaska thinking about a Democratic senator
BETHEL, Alaska — In this remote city in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, a pound of tomatoes costs nearly $7. Milk, when it’s available, is more than $13 a gallon. Almost all residents hunt or fish to feed themselves. Otherwise, they would go hungry. The cost of groceries is just too high.
Gas, currently $10 a gallon, is delivered during one small window each year by barge when the river water thaws. If the price is high when the gas arrives, as it has been this year due to the war in Iran, tough luck.
“That’s the price you’re set stuck with,” said Nicholai Joekay, a 42-year-old Bethel resident, on a recent blustery afternoon. “We’re already spread thin and you just get spread even more thin.”
Few places feel the national concerns over affordability more acutely than Alaska. Though the state is usually red, Democrats believe frustration over high prices and the Trump administration will help them flip Alaska — a key state in their quest for control of the Senate. Former congresswoman Mary Peltola, a Democrat, is tying her opponent, incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan, to Republican policies that she said is making the cost of living worse.
“Cuts to public radio, cuts to VA benefits, cuts to SNAP,” Peltola said at a recent campaign event in Anchorage. “It’s like reverse Robin Hood.”

This ‘World of Warcraft: Forever’ Mod Blocks All Interactions With Asmongold Fans
The beta for the hotly anticipated World of Warcraft: Forever has been marred by fans of the streamer Asmongold who have filled the game’s public spaces with spam and slurs. To fix the issue, a player named Solastro created a mod called OlympusMute that hides any chats from players associated with Asmongold’s multiple associated guilds and fandom. Funnily enough, Solastro told 404 Media he used to be a big Asmongold fan too.
OlympusMute, named after the main Asmongold guild Olympus, is a client side mod that creates a mute list designed to prevent players from seeing anything from players associated with Asmongold. It works simply by hiding chat messages from players with Olympus in their name. It also auto-declines group and guild invites from the muted players.
Solastro is a longtime WoW player who told 404 Media he found the Asmongold related spam in WoW: Forever intolerable. He said it’s worse when Asmongold himself logs in. “The trade chat is spammed with people wanting to get near him, on his layer, etc. The guild invite spam is prevalent, as he’s encouraged his followers to invite as many people as possible to Olympus,” he said.
The mod, essentially, is an attempt at a nuclear block. It “hides all player chat from muted players: Say, Yell, Emote, Whisper, General/Trade/custom channels, Guild, Party, Raid, Raid Warning, and Instance chat” and “hides their chat bubbles in the open world,” according to its description.
There are good reasons players may want to never hear from Asmongold or his guild. “Turned on @Asmongold stream for 3 minutes and just instantly see them harassing some random player and spamming shit like this in stormwind,” X user @mrfishpsirit said in a post on X. The account shared screenshots of chat bubbles calling to “deport all greenskins” and sexually assault Palestine. Asmongold himself replied to the post with a list of slurs he’d invented for the game’s fictional races.
“When the army of followers is in a single location, the chat is filled with /yell messages that often include slurs (with special characters to not get flagged), racist chants, misogynistic terms, etc. It’s something I heavily dislike, but it was too pervasive to be able to /ignore each player, so I found another solution just to filter chat,” Solastro added.

Education Department formally rescinds Title IX protections for LGBTQ students
The Education Department announced Monday it has formally rescinded the Biden-era Title IX interpretation that gave sex-based discrimination protections to students on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
Schools now must go back to the Title IX code as held under the previous Trump administration in 2020, which the department says will protect women’s sports.
“Thanks to today’s action, the published Title IX regulations faithfully reflect court orders and Congressional intent — reducing confusion for parents, students, and educational institutions. We will continue to relentlessly champion equal opportunity for all Americans and hold accountable any school or college that violates the rights, privacy, or athletic opportunities of our women and girls,” Education Secretary Linda McMahon said.
The Biden-era Title IX rule was already struck down in the court system after challenges from Republican states.
And the administration has pursued its own definition since President Trump returned to office, making deals with schools such as the University of Pennsylvania to take transgender athletes out of their women’s programs.
Opponents of the move say it will harm transgender athletes and weaken protections for sexual assault victims.
“Sexual harassment and assault continue to be pervasive in schools and, to the fullest extent possible, we should be working to enforce the laws that protect student survivors of sexual violence. Yet, Education Secretary Linda McMahon and the Trump administration have decided to ignore what survivors need, instead weaponizing Title IX to attack trans students,” said Shiwali Patel, senior director of education justice at the National Women’s Law Center.

MAGA Is Exploiting the Lindsay Clancy Case to Try to End Voting for Women
On Sunday, Fox News reported, “Calls to repeal women’s rights to vote are emerging from the online firestorm over the Lindsay Clancy trial, prompting Republican women to warn that the intraparty rhetoric could hurt the GOP.”
The fact that this article was published by Fox News was itself noteworthy. Press Baron Rupert Murdoch is one of the few remaining centers of power on the right who is strong enough to pick fights with Trump and his MAGA supporters. In recent years, Murdoch’s outlets have carved out a position for themselves as gatekeepers who work to protect the GOP brand from the most self-destructive impulses of MAGA. One recent example of this phenomenon is the decision to fire (or at least take off the air) the firebrand election denier Maria Bartiromo.
The Fox article was also significant for highlighting how the tragic case of Lindsay Clancy is being exploited by the hard right to justify misogyny. Clancy killed three of her children in 2023. Her legal defense was that she suffered from postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder. Eleven jurors voted to acquit Clancy based on this argument, but one juror resisted, leading to a mistrial.
Nine of the jurors who voted to acquit—presumably because they thought Clancy deserved pity rather than harsh punishment—were women; the lone holdout was a man. The hard right has seized on these facts to justify arguments that women are incapable of reason. The Fox article quoted a post on X that made a common argument: “The female jurors in the Lindsay Clancy trial are speaking out about their deliberations and disagreements with the sole male holdout. The more they speak the better they make the case for repealing the 19th Amendment.”

Hegseth's toughened 'standards' meant to thin women's ranks backfire on him: report
Last year, Hegseth introduced new sex-neutral fitness standards that sought to eliminate sex-based grading for combat soldiers on the military’s physical fitness exam. That exam includes a 3-mile run, push-ups or pull-ups, and an abdominal plank. When the standards were announced, some analysts worried it could lead to fewer women enlisting.
But a new report from The War Horse, a nonprofit newsroom, suggests that Hegseth’s new standards were not making the military more masculine, as he seemed to hope. The report found that 90% of female Marines in combat roles who took the fitness test passed or exceeded expectations.

Maga’s war on divorce is really a war on women
In 2022, no-fault divorce finally came to the UK. Couples can now simply call it quits by declaring an “irretrievable breakdown” in their marriage without needing to cite a reason (like adultery) for the split. The legal shake-up was hailed as a much-needed overhaul that would streamline the process of divorce and ease undue stress on couples and the family courts. In this aspect, we had lagged behind our neighbours across the pond for decades.
In 1969, California became the first state to legalise no-fault divorce, with then-governor Ronald Reagan declaring : “I believe it is a step towards removing the acrimony and bitterness between a couple that is harmful not only to their children but also to society as a whole.” The rest of America soon followed. By 2010, every US state had legalised some form of no-fault divorce. The “no-fault revolution”, as it became known, had finally won.
At least, until recently. Right-wing commentators like Daily Wire host Matt Walsh have previously shared support for an end to no-fault divorce, while podcasters Tim Pool and Steven Crowder argue that it creates a “raw deal” for men. Now-Vice President JD Vance argued on his 2021 Senate campaign trail that it let people “shift spouses like they change their underwear” (although, he hasn’t made any public comments on this since). House Speaker Mike Johnson has campaigned against it for years and once said that he holds it partly responsible for creating an “amoral society” that leads young people to “go into their schoolhouse and open fire on their classmates”.
This isn’t all talk from politicians and conservative blow-hards, either. There is legislative momentum building in red states like Texas, Iowa and Louisiana, which are all attempting to scale back no-fault divorce. In Texas, Republican legislators have repeatedly called to abolish it and even introduced a bill to that effect. It failed in 2025 but the party has continued to commit to ending it as part of its 2026 policy agenda. Iowa Republicans have also introduced a bill that would allow couples to sign away their right to no-fault divorces when they get married.

“For months, Ms. Walker had been asking for termination of her pregnancy — even though this was a wanted pregnancy — because she did not think she would survive the pregnancy. Tragically, she was right,” the lawsuit states. “An abortion at any point during her pregnancy would have saved her life.”

Meet the First New Cat Species Discovered in 100 Years
In 2016, Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz, a biologist and National Geographic Explorer working in Bolivia, received a call from a local wildlife sanctuary that had just been given what they described as “a weird cat.” It came from a local man who found it as a kitten on a road near a forest. The man took the animal home, believing it to be a domestic breed. But after about a year of living with the clearly wild animal, he realized it would be better off at a sanctuary.
As the lead scientist and founder of the Bolivian Felids Research Program (Programa de Investigación de Félidos Bolivia), Nogales-Ascarrunz was intrigued. The animal had a small, scrunched-up face, short and round ears, and long whiskers. It was, indeed, too small to be a housecat, and, most notably, it was covered in leopard-like spots. So she went to visit the creature at the Senda Verde wildlife sanctuary on the subtropical flank of the Bolivian Andes.
“I took a hundred pictures of it,” remembers Nogales-Ascarrunz. “I was so fascinated.”
What she couldn’t know at the time was that this curious cat had a secret. It would become the first new species of felid (i.e. the cat family) discovered in over 100 years, according to a study published today in the journal Current Biology. What’s exciting is the discovery is not a validation of a species proposed in the distant past, nor a previously recognized subspecies raised to species status—which are both more commonly reported and important findings. No, this cat was something totally new to science.

Katie Taylor closes out remarkable career with one-sided victory
cross-posted from: sh.itjust.works/post/66317784
The Ring’s junior welterweight champion added the vacant WBC title to her IBF, WBA, WBO belts and leaves the sport as the undisputed champion at 140 pounds.
Taylor previously reigned as the undisputed champion at lightweight and junior welterweight. She is also an Olympic gold medalist and a five-time amateur world champion.
The 10 rounds of action and the resultant trophies and accolades were just a small part of an emotionally charged night.
Croke Park is sacred ground for Irish sporting fans, and the famous old stadium became a cathedral to the 40-year-old fighter from Bray whose humble, hard working demeanor has endeared her to her people as much as her long list of achievements.
The young girl who had to tuck her hair up into her headguard and pretend to be a boy in order to get fights would grow into the most well-known, influential female fighter in boxing history. And, Saturday, she became the first fighter to headline the huge stadium since the great Muhammad Ali stopped Al “Blue” Lewis there in 1972.
“We did it, we brought boxing back to Croke Park,” Taylor said after having her hand raised for the 26th and final time. “Everyone here, I had you with me before London 2012 Olympics. You were with me at the Excel Arena in 2012 [when she won Olympic gold].
“You were with me through the heartbreak of Rio. You stayed with me turning pro. You traveled around the world to watch me in Cardiff, Manchester, Leeds, Boston, Brooklyn, Manhattan.
“Now you are here with me at this amazing stadium. I don’t know of any other country that has sold 80,000 tickets for a female athlete. I’m convinced Ireland is the only country.
"She (Pili) is actually a very awkward opponent, a great opponent, so thank you so much to her for being involved in this epic night.”

Miss World Uganda Wears Gown Inspired by the 7 Layers of a C-Section and the ‘Extraordinary Journey’ of Childbirth
Miss World Uganda’s dress during the Miss World competition paid a special tribute to motherhood.
On Thursday, Aug. 27, in Vietnam, the contestants wore couture designs as part of the Vietnam Beauty Fashion Fest’s 17th edition, “Soul of Heritage.”
Miss World Uganda’s Elle Muhoza wore a custom look by designer Keesha Abdallah titled “The Layers of Life,” which was meant to represent the seven layers that doctors cut through to perform a C-section.
The gown featured layers of white, yellow, pink and red fabrics, modeled after an illustration Abdallah found of the C-section layers: skin, fat, fascia, rectus muscles, peritoneum, uterus muscle and the amniotic sac.
“The concept was inspired by the layers encountered during a C-section and, more broadly, by the extraordinary journey of bringing life into the world,” the designer explained on Instagram. “Each color and layer was chosen to represent a stage, a texture, or a transition within that story — not to represent a particular race.”
She continued, “And that is precisely why we called it ‘The Layers of Life.’ Because life itself does not belong to one race, one country, or one colour. Life has no colour. Life is universal.”

I’m answering what the OG post is talking about. I can dig up examples just as well as you can, but I’m not at my desk at the moment.

Ugh that really sucks about your bosses and your week.
I like to rot in bed, but make it nice. I’ll set up snacks and drinks, put on clean sheets, wear my fave pajamas, and watch a good movie. My favorite rewatch lately has been 10 Things I Hate About You.
Basically treat myself like a parent tucking in their sick kid with all their favorites. Real cozy vibes.
I hope the end of the week is a little brighter for you than the start!

My mother is an alcoholic and started drinking most when I was a teen. Our relationship suffered greatly for it. I pulled away in my young adult life. I still called every few months, but it was difficult and lots of guilt and anger.
I’m really happy that I maintained those calls. She got sober 5 years ago. We worked really hard at making time for each other after that and now we’re back to trying new foods together and being much closer. Maybe not as close as we could have been, but I’m really grateful for the relationship we have now.

Good luck on the sweater hunt! A good sweater is priceless, but they can be tricky to find the exact right fit. I like sweaters, but I only have a couple that I really love. Hoodies feel so much more practical to me.
I think today is the perfect day to pull out the fall/winter clothes :3

“Our AI content strategy has started a ‘doom loop’ that will hurt the performance of our models and the entire web at the same time: It is highly unusual that an end-product threatens the economic foundations of its essential suppliers, but that is the situation we have created for our LLM business with respect to its ‘content supply chain,’” the document said.
Microsoft executives, including CEO Satya Nadella, testified under oath that after ripping content from the New York Times and other news sites, clicks to those news sites fully cratered, falling by more than 90 percent on Bing.
Documents obtained during the court proceedings found that OpenAI created “a hack to get around nytimes paywall,” to which OpenAI cofounder Greg Brockman said “ah, nice.” Microsoft executive Brent Hecht wrote that LLMs steal content “without ways of distributing economic value down the supply chain, [which] necessarily threatens the economic stability of those who create the content.”
Fuck these guys.

cis women also had to deal with comments like “well what did you do for him to do that to you?” in regards to domestic violence.
Most victims of domestic violence face this kind of scrutiny, not just cis women. I’m including men, trans, enbies, everyone.
There are definitely some circumstances where this rings true that isn’t rape, but rape victims are treated in this way the majority of the time.

At least 56,575 children are sexually abused every year.
That’s according to U.S. child protective services records.
The number is staggering—yet it only reflects child sexual abuse that is recognized, reported, and found likely to have occurred against children ages 0-17.
FBI crime data shows that 51% of reported rape is perpetrated against people ages 0-19.
That’s approximately 61,754 young rape victims every year, including our most vulnerable children, adolescents navigating middle and high school, and young adults just beginning to move through the world with more independence.
It’s really not a small cabal of the ultrawealthy though.
