If there is a historical case we should learn from, it might be the teaching of evolution and scientific critical thinking in the US The religious wars against teaching evolution, sterilized the scientific teachings across the US, teachers were afraid to teach anything close to something that might seem as criticizing a subset of christian sects' teachings, leading to a decay in critical thinking by children

With so many people calling for "restoring the US workforce" and "getting back our jobs", I am baffled how so many of the same people call for scientific censorship, book banning and internet crippling With what knowledge will we manage those factories? Who will teach our 10 year olds to operate the machines in the factories? immigrants? I know it is useless to argue by calling names, but I will do it nonetheless: Bozos, stop claiming to care about the children, you don't, you don't give a shit

@mttaggart I don't know if I'll stay with Ubuntu or move to Debian, but whichever I choose I'll be having mirrors for critical path repos

I get that something is going on, and they are working hard at managing it, I know how it works And that knowledge includes knowing that there are people that their sole job description is communication, between teams, between the company and the outside, that is their job, and they aren't doing it So if you are a tech person at Canonical, this is not about you, I assume you are doing your job, but where are the PMs, PR people, developer advocates, someone?

@iorsh@kishkush.net They already had a deb package, they simply rewrote in order to have only an AppImage

It's sad to see another good tool bite the dust (it isn't dead, just added to my list of tools to be replaced as soon as a good enough replacement is found)
https://github.com/raspberrypi/rpi-imager/issues/1368

I get the appeal of AppImage to maintainers, but if we had 300 problems with OS packages, now we have 300,000,000 problems with AppImages

I am actively looking for better ways to generate my rpi images now

I think the issue starts with the advocates, the people pushing for this to pass Next are the bystanders, the companies that will be impacted, and the organizations that are entrusted with our infrastructure but don't do enough for various reasons, some I can relate, some not, but I still think they should do something regardless I can't exaggerate by claiming that laws like this are the corrosion of our technological advancements, and the problem is, the US is not alone in this

Most companies don't really need AI, what they need is an interoperability requirement in the vendor contracts

@mttaggart This actually ensures that Microsoft, Apple, and other Orgs that managed to get hold of the keys signing the Secure Enclaves, will be able to impersonate users, and trust me, when it'll be the government, the excuse will be "to protect the kids" or "to fight terrorism" It's like we are trying really hard to prove @pluralistic right on his Red Team Blues piece about Secure Enclaves being useless once they become critical enough and a target for criminals, in or outside the government

I found this https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/launchpad-still-down-even-though-status-reports-as-up-all-day/81586
Launchpad still down even though status reports as up all day
Ubuntu Discourse

Launchpad still down even though status reports as up all day

launchpad is still down (across all tested systems and global IPs I have access to) even though it is reported as up all day on https://status.canonical.com/ yes I am aware of Update concerning DDOS attack on Canonical and Ubuntu , however, this needs to be tracked publicly. If launchpad is known down, I don’t want to increase server loads by doing an apt update constantly to check if I can upgrade my packages, I would rather the status site actually report accurate information.

Great keynote conversation today at the Open Source Summit NA with Dirk Hohndel and Linus Torvalds
My main takeaway: if you don't credit your interpreter / compiler for the resulting artifact, no reason to credit LLMs for the same work
Oh, and we don't need to worry about our jobs, we are programmers

@mttaggart@infosec.exchange We already lost We live in constant wonder where the next blow will appear? what harm are they already doing and we just don't know it yet? The only way to end a violent psychopath's game is to stop playing, fighting is giving it exactly what it wants, information what we are and aren't willing to tolerate
