Joni Mitchell – Ladies on the Canyon
Lately I have been listening to Joni Mitchell. She’s an artist I knew about but had not really listened to her. Tori Amos has a lot to thank Joni for. I picked this up at the record fair earlier in the day for $25 which was quite cheep really. I love Joni’s art work for this album cover. There is a fantastic chapter on Joni Mitchell in the book by Claire Dederer Monsters. She talks about male artists often privileged to peruse their art while women take care of the house and children and this is not seen as taboo, yet there is a taboo for mothers to peruse their art – in Joni’s case this is more extreme but I still think about that chapter often.

Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda
Last night we watched the Criterion edition of Akira Kurosawa’s 1990 film Dreams. My partner, being an avid Kurosawa fan, introduced me to his work when we were dating. I remember watching this film years ago but my memory was patchy (like a dream eh). Kurosawa doesn’t hold back – I’ll make the most beautiful scene of flowers and a rainbow with a little boy needing to gut his stomach for the fox spirits to make amends for childhood curiosity. The peach orchard scene is one of the most stunning pieces of cinema. Harrowing PTSD war flashbacks /survivor guilt and the final scene about humanity, capitalism and nature are as relevant today as it was then.
I woke up this morning still thinking about the film. So I put this on, which seemed perfectly fitting following Dreams, with it’s own themes of loss, transcendence and overall hazy vibe.
This is one of my favourite weekend morning coffee records.

Cortex - Troupeau Bleu
I bought this from Searchers in Melbourne in 2022 after hearing the track Mary et Jeff pumping through the shop. I plucked up the courage later to ask the guy what was playing. He was so thrilled to discuss this 70s French jazz fusion act I'd never heard of. I left briefly and then ran back and bought the album. It's now become one of the favourite records I own.
This is a 2020 repress and sounds great. If you fancy a first press there is one going for $2333 on discogs from France right now. Be quick!
Cortex started with two guys Alain Mion & Alain Gandolfi who look like the guys from my dad's old meteorology VHS tapes. What really makes this album is the voice of Mireille Dalbray (wife of Alain Mion). Think Flora Purim style vocals. Mireille apparently died shortly after this albums release. The other subsequent albums don't quite hit the same.

@johnspithead Well funny you say that as I thought the same thing yesterday. After scrolling through 19 pages of photos it wasn't popping up. Odd. I think I posted about it on Instagram before I started this blog.
