I did a series of split-grade density test strips. I tried grade 00 at 20 seconds, plus grade 5 at 5, 7.1, 10, 14.1, 20, 28.3 and 40 ses (half-stop sequence). The results are interesting. You get a range of "paper grades" from about 0 to about 3, but with much different toes (highlight separation is increased) and shoulders (shadow separation is reduced), compared to the base curves.

Following up on the curves I posted earlier, I had Claude write Python to turn the S curves into Photoshop-style curves, and animate them from softest to hardest. The results were not what I expected -- not at all a "smooth" evolution from first to last. The "deviation animation" shows how the brightness at each input point differs from an ideal linear 1:1 conversion

@bosak@flx.masto.host To my surprise (science works?) it printed very easily on grade 2. The attached is a very close simulation of the darkroom print. (Better that tnan scanning or digitizing: "that trick never works", as Rocky used to say.)

I tested my paper and printing workflow and got some interesting curves. See alt-text for tech details.

Most interesting: grade 2 and 2.5 are virtually identical (except that grade 2 is denser). Grade 1.5 and 2 have virtually the same calculated ER. Is this due to the high-CRI LED I'm using instead of an incandescent? The no-filter curve would do interesting, possibly attractive, things to gamma. Next weekend, if I have time: check split-grade (00+5).

@bosak I like the first one better, even though you lose the extra set of signs.

@bosak@flx.masto.host LIghting: yeah: this is in the bathroom with a crummy sweep. The camera barely fit; need a studio. It's a test to show me that sensitometry is working and (soon) to see if it's printable at a predictable contrast in the wet darkroom. This is a digital work print; lots more to do with dodging in the contact print, and then I'll revisit the digital version to match. So far, one sheet of film; # of test prints TBD. 400 test images would take about 10 years, at the rate I'm working...

I followed this procedure, based on aas.org's notes and darksky's notes. I'm going to need to thread it, so bear with me.

  1. Log in to CORES: https://apps.fcc.gov/cores/userLogin.do -- leave this open, request security code, and enter it once it arrives. (It takes two minutes or so for me.)

You'll get to the 4th screen. Leave it open. And go to the next step.

This pair of curves compares true 10m at 20C versus the MDC calculated 11:17 at 18.5C (it was chilly that night). The curve just doesn't match. The longer dev curve has higher DMAX but a longer toe. And just a different shape. I had read that Fomapan 100 really needs to be developed at a consistent temperature, but this really shows it. All 8x10 sheet film, by the way. 2/

Some thoughts: The curves explain "Fomapan highlights" (the flat, lifeless sky): the curve starts to droop after you get about 5 stops (0.3 log units) of exposure above your shadow point. If the sky lands up there, it will get flattened. The non-obvious steps I had to take to get these curves show why Fomapan 100 has a bad reputation in some corners. I should try for a brighter light (a flash?) so I can compare a 0.4 sec exposure to my 21 sec exposure. 3/3

@bosak@flx.masto.host I thought it might be interesting to post the scan of the negative, reversed and cropped for easier comparison. There's lots of detail in the highlights on the shell. The clean ups in the background are obvious. Should be fun to print; maybe too many options!

@bosak@flx.masto.host yeah, I intentionally blew it out. I saw something similar in my phone test shots and kind of liked the graphic effect on the phone screen ("not exactly group f.64"). It will need to come way down for a darkroom print. This rendering is almost straight out of the inversion. I fixed up the sweep, but am deferring serious adjustments to the darkroom. Then may adjust the digital rendering (or move on to something else).
