They say that AI should be replacing time-consuming things we don't want to do, so here's an idea for an AI agent that just scrolls back and forth in my Slack sidebar with a stunned expression, trying to pick something to work on.

We're doing a 3-month paid curation fellowship program this summer for a small cohort of folks. This is entry-level content work and I'm looking especially for people with subject-matter expertise in Data Science and Python, US politics and elections, and geopolitical current events. (Subject-matter experience is more important than editorial or Medium experience.) It will be a real insider view of how large platforms work, with full paid training. Details at the link!

It's like after a year+ of AI-generated images, we're all in love with photography again. Love to see it.

"I lower my expectations to try and find everything in tiny things available to me: a fiction book to read, a blank white page to be typed with black letters..." @antonkutselyk@medium.com
(I highly dislike "misery lit", which, from the title, this might appear to be. But this is a good example of how a skillful writer can write about negative feelings without going into that trope. From a writer I follow in Ukraine)
The pleasure of a long-read that I can just fall into seems so rare these days, but it does happen, and here's a story that delivered. I laughed out loud at the encounter in the ice cream shop. 🎁 🔗 https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/25/magazine/quit-sugar.html?unlocked_article_code=1.sE4.ycya.lfvv7UJf5-so&smid=url-share
It would be interesting to talk to people who were actually doing the work of fact-checking at Meta. Setting aside disappointment about what it means, I can imagine all sorts of operational challenges that could have made it seem futile.

A global internet has been around for decades now. Every date display should include a year and every time displayed should include the time zone. I will die on this hill.
When the video of the bridge coming down in Baltimore popped up in my feed, I scrolled by, assuming it was some AI-generated thing. I've been thinking about that ever since.

"Does an AI program get an erection when it realizes it’s making it harder for actual publications that treat writers respectfully to compete? I do. Do they feel pride knowing they’re feeding the public the lowest form of writing possible, writing that makes brochures at the DMV seem interesting? No, they don’t. They simply turn out content bereft of the feeling of hurting people, like that time I stepped on a lizard as a nine-year-old and smiled."
