IT trends vary by the decades.

2010s: functional programming
2020s: dysfunctional programming

If I were a news org, I would jump into Mastodon with two feet as early as possible.

Why? Corporate walled social media gardens tipped the power balance a lot towards themselves at the expense of journalism.

A shift towards more decentralized social media could restore some of that balance. A savvy newsroom could be here early and trial interesting ways of collaborating: Mastodon is open source so it’s relatively easy to customize to tweak it towards a news-org setup.

@bagder @LaF0rge Yes that’s entirely fair, it would not have taken much to state: “We are removing these names from the maintainers list because of US sanctions enforcement. No, this is not optional, at a penalty of personal criminal liability but I Linus Torvalds would not challenge this removal even if I could” (Which was i think the gist of the statements that came out later)

@LaF0rge @bagder Sanctions enforcement is not a joke, and there is a reason even chinese banks comply with cutting russians off. Going with your analogy, if hypothetically a non-NATO member Germany would start a war and others would sanction Germany, you as a german developer would rightly get removed from kernel maintainers lists. This is how sanctions work. I can’t believe this is controversial, programmers are attempting international law and failing again.

@LaF0rge Where does that freedom come from? Oh yes that’s right: copyright law and licensing. Whereas sanctions enforcement is coming from national security law and even constitutional arrangements. FOSS exists in the world and you do not get to ignore some laws while relying on others to make FOSS work in the first place.
