When will GitHub do something about code review responses being shown without the preceding thread of comments.
I look like a fucking idiot.

TIL: “Blob” stands for “Binary Large Object”.
Which means I am now a member of the “People who say PIN Number” group by having frequently used “binary blob”…
Sadly, Bevy’s ECS (`bevy_ecs`) is not `no_std` (altho I think it could be!). So to use it on the GameBoy Advance, I had to write my own. Taught me a lot about Rust’s type system, and now I have a tiny ecs running on a GBA :D
(Shoutout to the `agb` crate)
Me two weeks ago:
“Oh I know, I’ll quickly add an API endpoint that accepts tar files. That’s a simple file format.”
Me now, using reverse engineering tooling to debug why the off-the-shelf tar library truncates file names:
“What the fuck.”
👀 WebAssembly GC is behind a flag in V8.
Wasm can now handle structs and arrays as native types and the host will provide the garbage collection.
Curious to see if languages like Grain or TinyGo can adopt this.

This may come as a surprise, but there’s a new episode of Off The Main Thread less than a month after the last one.
In this one, @jaffathecake@mastodon.social and I talk about whether build tools are good or bad and we talk a bit about the build tool Bazel.

Spent last night moving boids to the GPU (cc @chrisbiscardi@hachyderm.io). Bevy’s ECS/dep injection gives you easy access to the wgpu device to create your own WebGPU compute pipeline.
Best part is that it straight up runs on the web via Wasm, too.
Not sure what’s wrong with the bottom left tho 😂
🔥 Brand-new episode of
🧵 Off The Main Thread!
In this one, about the Entity Component System (ECS) architecture (and Bevy), and whether ECS are useful for the web.
@jaffathecake@mastodon.social is doing a round-up of the new @TC39’s stage 3 proposals.
Implementing Boids is one of those things that’s so mesmerizing to look at where you can’t stop playing around...
(Used Boids as a means to play with Bevy. Really fun.)
New Year’s break well spent!
(Alt: 100% finished Talos Principle II. It’s a great sequel that I actually think is better than the first game.)
Little Bevy engine trick discovery of the evening:
Since we do not have `try` blocks yet and I wanted to use `?` to handle `Option` in my systems, I found out about the `pipe()` function that let me convert the system’s return type to make `App` happy.
Let's put the spec aside for sec.
Is import.meta is fair game? It feels like it has become a namespace for tools (and even runtimes!) to expose non-standard information and functionality.
Should this get embraced? Or will import attributes supersede for most of the use-cases?
