In sane countries the government has a neutral service, backed by laws securing anonymity of verification, for this kind of shit. Only in commercial, dystopian, kleptocracies does it seem reasonable to have a company doing this.

“Due to COVID we are temporarily suspending the trolley service in your train”. Never returned. “Due to COVID, we have temporarily removed your inflight magazine”. Never returned. “Due to COVID, we now temporarily only clean your hotel room if you request it”. Still have to request a room clean. “Due to COVID, the salad bar has been temporarily suspended”. Still no salad bar. “Due to COVID, you now have to book a slot to go to the tip”. Still have to book a slot. “Due to COVID, the sleeper train has been temporarily suspended”. Never returned. These are just the examples I can think of.

No that isn’t why.

There is no correlation between population density and broadband speed in the west.

Car finance. It’s so prevalent, I think I’m literally the only one on our road that doesn’t drive a 1 year old, brand new, financed car. Literally everyone is like “but it’s only $499/month and I can just hand it back when I want a new one”. Well shit, yes, but try tallying up what you’ve paid for running all these new cars every three years. Save up instead and continue saving after you bought the car. Then you can afford a different car later.

The numbers are obviously wiiiiildly off but it’s certainly true that there are some STIs that condoms aren’t adequately able to protect you against (HSV, HPV, syphilis).

Ah, come on this is valid investigation. If you get the same error every time, you know you can find it and debug it, somewhat with ease. If you don’t, you might have a thornier issue at hand.

Behold the Splendor!

  • TerraMaster 4 bay - 30 TB usable and hosts all family services
  • China special N100 - runs OPNsense
  • gobox to provide a SIP DECT bridge; wife wants a landline. I don’t get it either.
  • ZBT-2 ZigBee antenna for garage alarm and handling a bunch of IKEA lights.
  • a Hive heating controller (UK “smart” heating system).
  • A switch with bondable ports.
  • All sitting on a custom-built shelf with lots of ventilation and cabling routing holes.

Ii can thoroughly recommend “A Brief History of Intelligence” (by Max Bennett), which explains how intelligence has taken steps through evolution, what those steps were etc. Spatial intelligence requires spatial understanding and it’s not something that can be solved through a large language model, IMHO. I’m excited to see how these are solved. And I’m terrified to see how these will be solved.

Show me a working alternative that’s actually been implemented in the real and I’ll happily shift. Until then I’ll happily stick with a well-regulated, Nordic-style market economy.

That’s not quite my understanding of EEE. Embrace - adopt something that someone else has done Extend - add proprietary extensions on top of the original, quicker than the original owner can Extinguish - Kill the original owner off by moving quicker then either slow down or kill your own support for the product What the AI model owners are doing seems to me just to be normal loss-leading with a view to gain market share.

They are currently selling it at a huge loss, agreed. They’ve got plenty of runway for specialised hardware prices to come down, for companies to get hooked and plugged into the ecosystem and for real value to be demonstrated. When this happens they’ll raise prices and companies will gladly pay it. Profit at this point is not relevant, seen from the perspective of investors.

I’m sorry, but have you read the technical documentation? The design is intentional created this way to avoid tracking. You are issued a set of ZKP tokens that you hand back to websites. They cannot correlate these tokens back to you, nor can the operator of the system. Now they could lie, of course, and violate the design (but being open source that’s a little harder), but if the government wanted to secretly track you, much more precise tools exist for this already.

Affinity: I’ve tried and tried and tried with GIMP and it just doesn’t do it for me. Microsoft Flight Simulator: X-plane yes. But MSFS is just stellar good, with BeyondATC. Excel: Gsuite sheets - yuck, contributing my info to Google. Libre Calc. Please, they are 10 years behind. No proper table support, no MAP, no spill (yes, array formulas sort of work), etc etc. but chiefly: So slow compared to Excel and Gsuite. That’s it.

Depends on where you are and the conditions of storage. If the fuel has a lot of ethanol and it’s been stored in a damp environment, I definitely wouldn’t characterise it as brand new. But yeah, drop it in the car and top of with fresh fuel and you’ll be fine.

They are definitely proof that alternatives exist. Whether they can scale to governing a state of disperate cultures and peoples is a different question. But you did answer with some real alternatives, which I’ll look into more. Thank you.

Of course things can break and something might be able to refer back to you, until it gets fixed. But if your argument is that “the standard is fine, but something might not quite work”, then the same argument applies to your phone’s location tracking, your debit/credit payments etc. The vast majority of us happily use systems on the basis that they are secure, until they’re not, and then things get fixed. Your argument has to apply evenly.

I’m just a movement generator. Saying “it’s a text generator” cannot be the full force of your criticism, if the text it generates is incredibly useful. What could AI be on a screen if not a text generator? Your views have got to be formed by WHAT text is generated given that AI cannot express itself through any other channel than text. If you can give AI a deeply complex code base and ask it to find the likely cause of an obscure bug, and the solution is right, then you’ll have to acknowledge that some form of reasoning is going on, no? And given that no other system has previously enabled this form of reasoning, it seems a shame to judge AI on semantics, rather than usefulness.

Yes AI is definitely a topic that seems to have a fairly united front. I’ve worked in software engineering for 25+ years and I can see the impact AI has on our discipline. So it’s not like I’m hailing it to be an all-positive force - I just think “all it does is generate text” is a weird, flat form of criticism.

Again, we are stuck in a semantics debate. What I call reasoning you don’t, it seems. But all I know, as someone that has worked in software engineering for 25+ years, is that the output of whatever it does, and whatever you call it, is incredibly useful. Saying “it just generates text” is a reflexive reaction that attempts to flatten the nuance. All Columbus did was sail west. All America did was throw some fuel into a tube and put Neil Armstrong on the top. All Picasso did was to throw some paint onto a cloth. All this PhD student did was generate text. Surely we’ve got to have some more nuance in there. If there’s a difference between 10000 monkeys hacking on a typewriter and a human writing their doctoral thesis, the quality of their act isn’t in whether text was generated but WHAT text was generated.

I was deeeep in the OneNote eco-system. I forced myself out of it and spent a lot of time finding the best alternative so I can save you some time: The answer is Obsidian. But to get to even 60% of what OneNote does, you need a fair amount of plugins, which lowers stability somewhat and, having tried the three biggest sync systems, you might as well go straight to paying for their sync. The self-hosted sync options do not work reliably.
