U.S. conservatives are pushing the same kids’ social media age-verification laws they mocked when EU “leftists” did it.
Left vs. right is the trap. The real fight is defending internet freedom from politicians from every side.

@alex@feed.yopp.me separated devices can have a bigger distance between them and have less radio interference.
Also, having 2 devices allowing to use bluetooth + thread firmware on one of them.

I wanted the smart home to come back instantly after a power cutoff (such as when I’m installing a relay).
So the HA server, Ethernet switch, and radio coordinators are connected to a mini battery.
The coordinators use the server’s USB ports because the UPS has a few outputs.

Wi-Fi isn’t ideal for a smart home. You want a separate, more reliable low-power radio network.
I use Zigbee as the main one, plus Matter over Thread for a few newer IKEA devices.
I got the radio coordinators from https://smlight.tech/ and connected them over Ethernet.

Home Assistant used to run on our shared Fedora CoreOS server. Whenever I had to fix or reboot it, my family couldn’t even turn off the lights.

Now the smart home has its own machine: a Home Assistant Green, partly to support the HA team.

My previous smart home also ran on Home Assistant instead of a closed cloud platform because:
- Local control makes everything respond instantly
- HA supports far more devices and services than any proprietary cloud
- No privacy issues
