I am a CS Ph.D. candidate at Princeton University. I investigate technical promises made by overzealous proponents and often find that they fall short.

Currently looking at machine learning failures: hype, overoptimism, and reproducibility, and writing a book on AI Snake Oil.

I'm ecstatic to share that preorders are now open for the AI Snake Oil book! The book will be released on September 24, 2024.

@randomwalker@mastodon.social and I have been working on this for the past two years, and we can't wait to share it with the world.

@roland @randomwalker We're aware that the models are stochastic. That's why we tested it against a benchmark with 1,600 examples and ran the experiments thrice to get some sense of the uncertainty.

If you have been anywhere near AI discourse in the last few months, you might have heard that AI poses an existential threat to humanity.

In today's Wall Street Journal, @randomwalker@mastodon.social and I argue that claims of x-risk rest on a tower of fallacies: https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/ai-risk-humanity-experts-thoughts-4b271757

Honored to be on this list.

When @randomwalker@mastodon.social and I started our AI snake oil newsletter a year ago, we weren't sure if anyone would read it. Thank you to the 13,000 of you who read our scholarship and analysis on AI week after week.

@andresmh An example of (1) could be face recognition and biometrics, where one could reasonably argue that the benefits from a govt. deployment of FRT can *never* be justified, despite the benefits, given the high costs of selling your face photographs to be included in a dataset. We are already seeing this with FRT being disbanded in so many municipalities.

@andresmh (2) When the hype around a technology (especialy an emerging one, such as AI) disproportionately consumes media and public attention, and actors spreading the hype are self-interested and have billions of dollars at their disposal. PR-speak becomes widespread, even among academic institutions that are supposedly neutral, and talking clearly about harms is important to cut through the hype (or the critihype).
