Sorry for the mstdn absence, I am using Bluesky more often these days - wanted to send a reminder that our Ethical Data Initiative Town Hall is happening this coming Monday (31.03) and it is still possible to register to follow online: https://ethicaldatainitiative.org/2024/12/20/ethical-data-initiative-annual-townhall-event/ This article, just out, explains what EDI is and why #dataethics matters more than ever: https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/10938021

Strange weeks at work, but my research group @opensciencestudies continues to inspire and nurture me, and I heard from Cambridge University Press that my small book on the philosophy of #OpenScience got accepted for publication later this year - one last read and I am sending it off to production. Referees found it rather provocative, I hope it will support ongoing dialogues around how to reform research responsibly, focusing on planetary health not technological empires

Just posted preprint on ethical AI focusing on data modelling strategies to tackle uncertainty & opacity - with brilliant mathematicians Cassandra Bird and Daniel Williamson. We use COVID-19 transmission models as example. Comments welcome as we wait for referee reports! https://arxiv.org/abs/2309.05529

On the meaning of uncertainty for ethical AI: philosophy and practice

Whether and how data scientists, statisticians and modellers should be accountable for the AI systems they develop remains a controversial and highly debated topic, especially given the complexity of AI systems and the difficulties in comparing and synthesising competing claims arising from their deployment for data analysis. This paper proposes to address this issue by decreasing the opacity and heightening the accountability of decision making using AI systems, through the explicit acknowledge

What is misinformation? Is it always a matter of “getting the facts wrong”? Or can we understand it very differently? Come discuss with us in Munich on December 9 - event in person only, unfortunately, but registration and reception are free thanks to ERC funding! https://www.sts.sot.tum.de/en/sts/home/events/article/missinformation-workshop/

Replying to
@QNFO@mstdn.science thanks for the interest and the comment! isn’t it a bit worrying that you think AI-assisted research is not compatible with being socially responsive and responsible? I don’t see why that should be the case, and yes I am very strongly in favour of this being a priority in AI development. Discussing the problem of misinformation seems crucial in that respect, precisely because of all the problems this brings for AI applications and beyond
