Replying to
AI discourse - crappy treatment of disabilities
I've heard claims that Gen AI can help students with additional support needs. Not only does this hold those students up as having failed before they've even started, assuming they are incapable of matching their peers with proper support from their educational institution, but it also erases them. Forcing students with any form of disability to use AI instead of investing in robust support is a form of eugenics. There. I went there. We remove their active minds from the academic sphere through slopifying them. And that's so unbelievably unethical, I can't even fully express my outrage.

Replying to
AI discourse - copyright
We are also the arbiters of copyright law, for good and for bad. We have to be the ones telling lecturers to remove that cheeky PDF from their closed virtual learning platform and become the Copyright Police. I hate that role but that's a conversation for a different thread. We also blocked services like SciHub and actively told people to not use it due to copyright infringement. But we're saying it's fine to use Gen AI for inspiration and help with research? Are we actually that myopic?

Replying to
AI discourse - critical reading
It wasn't that long ago when my profession jumped on the "fake news" bandwagon and every talk at every conference was about how we combat it. Heck, even I did some touring talks. Why is fake news something that we outright rejected and locked into our core skill sets around teaching critical reading, but AI seems to not be given the same short shrift. Why reject that but muse about delivering training on how to create better AI prompts?

So I love Japanese cultural stuff while also being very aware of its imperfections (as with anything) but I feel that the #anime #MyDressUpDarling just went places I never expected. It's a wholesome anime about a cosplaying highschooler whose classmate makes her outfits for her resulting in a lot of angst around their feelings for each other. BUT it's the exploration of gender identity that I found most refreshing. It being ok to mix it up, be a different gender, enjoy things that are often heavily gender coded. It's such a delight and really demonstrates how conservative thinking is melting away when it comes to lives represented through art for younger generations. Heck yeah! 🎉
