Ordered a Steam Frame.
I've only ever toyed around with VR in the past so have no idea what to play when I get it — beyond Half Life Alyx and my flight sims.
Anyone have any suggestions?

@nev@jawsome.nevy.xyz @doqunbop@mastodon.gamedev.place I assume Valve will give it some attention with this new launch and the coinciding investment they've made in Lepton.
I'll post about my experience with it when it gets here anyway. I'm looking forward to tinkering :)

This is reassuring. The next election is likely to include the biggest tactical vote ever.
No matter their political persuasion, Brits recognise the national emergency that is Reform.

Do I need to know anything about running VR on Linux? I hear folks saying it's quirky all the time but never understood why. amdgpu with mesa on Wayland is perfectly fine for normal gaming, and assuming it just shows up as two controllers and an extra display I assumed it'd all be pretty much normal in Sway?

And YouGov have it as a dead heat.
Fwiw I tend to trust YouGov the most of all the polling orgs here. They have the best record by far.
If the bump ends up having been... virtually nothing, or only lasting barely more than a week, I do wonder how the coup's advocates will feel. "It's all still better than Starmer's gradual improvements," or, "We'd have lost anyway," I suppose.

@saxifraga@lgbtqia.space The rationale is that the political roles at the top of each Ministry are a lot less domain-specific than might intuitively be thought. The skillset is largely common between them — boring administrative senior leadership and people management.
Domain experience has more importance in some than others — Treasury, Defence, and Health chief among them, I'd say — and it is silly watching people get dragged-and-dropped between them regularly, but I'm not sure it should be required.

God damn, even my former MP (who I lost due to boundary changes) is out as Welsh Secretary.

Some of the other visibly loyal Starmerites, like Lammy, Reeves, and Jones being ousted was to be expected, but I thought Jo would endure.
Haigh coming back is a bad move. Healey back in defence will be good, if painful after his backstab.
All eyes on who gets the Exchequer.

Funny moment last night before they did "Do You Realize?"
They said, "Everyone, turn to the person next to you!"
I was there with my ex-girlfriend I'm sorta reconnecting with. I turn to her.
"Hold them close!" I obey.
"Look them deep in the eyes!" I comply, and she and I are glaring into each other.
"Tell them you love them!" She and I both burst out laughing.

Survation with a similar result.
That's six polls confirming a bump, two with Labour leading — but four of them were from roughly the same time some weeks before he actually assumed power.
Breakdowns elsewhere show most of it is coming from former Labour voters coming back — mostly from the Greens. That's no bad thing but it sets Burnham up for the inevitable tension between giving ground to the left or the right.

Talking with a colleague today who has a son named Arthur, and he's suitably obsessed with Arthurian legend and D&D and similar. Top lad.
She also told me that he's so nerdy that 'Arthur' had turned into Artoo in their family, after R2-D2, and that's just the coolest thing I've ever heard.
Imagine having a kid named for C-3PO though 🤔

I'm guilty sometimes of undervaluing the importance of CPU power with stuff that I'm doing. Like, whatever the workload I'm likely to be working with, the differences in performance always feel like they're going to be marginal.
I just migrated a workload off a 7401P (24c/48t, 2017) that took 8 minutes to a 9900x (12c/24t, 2024) that took it down to ~55s.
I may need to move to Threadripper at the next refresh 🤔

Long, long, LONG, overdue. Neidle taking him to task last month was a massive exposure, even after a ton of other recent disastrous online conversations and videos.
He's not the worst at it, nor even the worst Brit, but the online space is full of people peddling wild views far outside the consensus as truth to people who don't know what they're hearing is nonsense — especially on economics.

I don't want to get into my personal view of the party right now because it doesn't matter, and my thoughts now are going to pale as we collapse back to wild, permanent opposition. I'll come back to it around 2029.
But I'm not leaving. I learned my lesson, leaving in 2016 during the Corbyn takeover. I'm staying this time. I'll be here when the next Starmer arrives after another ~20 years of Tory hegemony. May we survive until then.

I hate this weather. Hate hate hate it. Every time I go outside I can't wait to scurry back home to my air conditioned flat with the curtains drawn and cool darkness enveloping me.
Nevertheless, I'm on leave this next week and bouncing around the country a bit, and I'm spurred to pick up the camera again.

A likely ignominious end for a publication that wrought oh so much damage during its ascendency.
One of my red flags is when people say they don't like/trust/watch/listen to the BBC, and when people on the left say it they invariably have The Canary in their repertoire instead.
A friend of a friend recently told me they *only* get their news from The Canary, and thought it was the very best source for journalism in the UK. That stung.

Got reminded of this piece from last year about one of the more absurd media moments of recent years. Mass uproar and fury at something that... actually went pretty well.
Came up in the context of susceptibility to misinformation and our lack of a shared understanding of reality anymore. Spending some time with folks absorbed in populist narratives is exhausting.

An actually accurate piece on migraines, absent the woo that usually accompanies them.
Need to get 'prodrome' in my lexicon in place of 'aura' (I thought they were one and the same) and 'postdrome' for the post-migraine fatigue.

@shimminbeg@masto.ai This is why I think he has no hope. He wants to expand the voter window leftward while holding on to the centre/right-flank — but the folks who fled leftward are deeply committed to the causes he wants to hold or advance (like drilling) rightward.
Maybe he's banking on a total collapse to the left from other parties — Greens and LibDems have both hit 8% in the last week — and that folks will come rushing back, but I don't see it.

It's such a strange moment. The US is in the midst of a democratic crisis, with woefully unqualified and regressive right wing populists having total control of their government and dominating their culture.
But the moment will pass, and things will incrementally improve from November, and one day folks will look back at these painful absurdities as just a dark blip — as they did on Nixon, and Trump during the Biden years.

By the by, they don't show up on these graphs, and some orgs lump them in under 'other', but in the raw tables Your Party consistently polls at 0%.
Given all the comedy Sultana and Corbyn gave us, it's remarkable that Restore Britain polls higher than them on a consistent basis simply by virtue of having *any* support whatsoever.

@humanhorseshoes@mastodon.world When I was on medication for them, that was the key.
I manage them now by managing my stress and my sleep — and still noticing early. I have a few early warning signs that come up to four days in advance: garrulousness, hyperactivity, and a specific form of gastric distress. If I notice one start, I make a conscious effort to mindfully destress and I can usually prevent them entirely now.

This piece, originally titled, "Who broke Britain?" (I hate it when publishers change titles like this, especially when they choose worse ones) really nails it.
The unspoken conclusion (the Tories) comes with the wider undercurrent of misinformation and populism as the cause for Britain consistently having chosen the most self-harming route between 2010 and 2024.

@DM_Ronin@mstdn.social @shimminbeg@masto.ai I mean, if you consider that a subset of voters are outright antisemitic and conspiracy theory–addled, and view that side of our present politics as more important than the nativist regressivism, where else might they find a home if not in Restore?
Reform, for their many faults, are outwardly supportive of Jews and Israel, something I've personally heard lamented by some folks who otherwise support them. To some voters, that is a deal breaker.

@shimminbeg@masto.ai Another possibility might be hinted at by this from the mayoral election.
Approximately half of Tory voters prefer Labour as a second choice rather than reform. If replicated nationally, and he can make small inroads leftwards then somehow bank on a Tory collapse in the next few years... Again, tough to see a route to it. More likely Reform collapses and floods the Tories.

There are many good reasons to oppose cryptocurrencies and many reasons why shady individuals flock to them, but it's plainly obvious exactly why the Faragists and a certain subset of the online right *love* them.
It's literally just because they're unregulated, and in many cases transactions are untraceable. Farage lobbying Bank of England for them is akin to him lobbying directly for legalised corruption, foreign influence, and unlawful political financing.

I don't post much about the insane streamer drama I embarrassingly enjoy, but this one deserves special mention.
Here, Stardust, a relatively small streamer, persuades a toxic doxxer and rapist vtuber streamer to go on stream with her then over *6 hours* questions him calmly and with total poise, systematically proving him wrong on every single point, and masterfully shutting down his evasions, deflections, and attempts to wriggle out.
Glorious.

I don't know whether to highlight this as positive news or not, but yet another right wing voice is calling out Kemi Badenoch's abandonment of the net zero consensus: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2026/07/28/pull-brink-kemi-badenoch-before-you-destroy-conservatives/
Her rightward lurches look, with hindsight, less insane politically now given the Burnham coup, but even so I think this is one crazy stepping stone too far. Reckless populism epitomised. We should expect better of the Loyal Opposition.
