Yes he is right, targeting well-being directly is way more sane than pretending ‘market forces’ will mysteriously result in well-being despite all appearances

Well farting is very universal, but ornate dora minifigure panoramas are somewhat niche

Don’t worry, none of us have forgotten about the international pedo ring that many of our public servants tolerated, enabled, and participated in and then did not take responsibility for when they were exposed.

That ‘neutrality’ commitment by the university perfectly captures what most institutional commitments to political neutrality accomplish: repression.
I’m sure it contributes to the thriving and open academic environment that the university system was designed to protect:)

I think AI is in a similar place as GMOs were 10 years ago. The technology isn’t inherently problematic but the main companies rolling it out seem to be doing so during a banner drop where the banner screams “I’m evil and I intend to burn this place to the ground.” We shouldn’t trust them because they’re practically telling us not to in the same breath they use to promote their products. I would say most of the main models available to the public fall under this boat.
Just like GMOs this doesn’t mean that there’s not some cool AI research being done, for ex. special models run by researchers to improve diagnostics or look for new antibiotics. It remains to be seen whether the cool stuff will have been worth whatever it is we lose.

Yeah it’s like gmos. The biggest companies in the game are well documented as ill-intentioned profiteers. The technology isn’t inherently bad.

I grew up somewhere where it didn’t cool down a lot at night and the only solution was to sleep in front of a fan. Sometimes I could get the fan to blow directly into the sheets and sort of balloon them out which was pleasant.
Where I live now it cools at night so I can open the windows at night and close them up during the day. Sometimes I close the curtains too if it will be extreme. I open the windows and create a cross draft when it cools down.
Those ice/fan pseudo a/c setups don’t work well.

Yeah ever since it started hosting serious topics I’ve had the impression microblogging encourages ‘gotcha’ behavior and discourages meaningful discussion.
Less so when it first launched and was mostly used to follow what your favorite band was up to or watch your friend live tweet a south park episode.

I’m going to nominate two novels by Laline Paull:
- Pod
- The Bees
Paull writes from the perspective of non-human characters in a super creative (and sometimes unsettling) fashion. She’s not a scientist but I feel her writing honors an appreciation and curiosity about the natural world, ‘other minds,’ and the impact of humans on the natural world.
POD probably fits in the genre niche of “climate fiction” but even among climate fiction it’s weird AF.

I had to opt in to an AI medical transcriptionist to get into an online appointment. Even though it said it was optional there was no option to say no. When I got in my appointment I asked the Dr. to reverse it and she said she would let her asst. know.

That’s what they’re doing for my SO’s big introductory class in the humanities. No homework, quizzes, or papers. Short answer exams done in a special testing center.
Really sucks for people who were decent at essays and turning in assignments on time but not great at exams.

Yeah I would have done much better in high school like this, though I don’t think AI will eliminate the poster projects unfortunately.

If we went with their ‘make the AI companies pay for it’ idea I fear we would be in the same place we were with the carbon offset bs. We need an overall reduction in greenhouse gasses quickly. Adding a bunch of new renewable capacity but dedicating it all to data centers doesn’t reduce our existing emissions and even without the electricity issue scaling data centers costs real resources that we need elsewhere, not just the make believe money the AI billionaires have mutually created out of thin air.

Yeah they’ve pushed this into the mainstream.
The general US population is already overwhelmingly against sending weapons to IL and supporting their genocide, it’s the politicians that continually side with them against our interests and have done for decades.
