The sad reality of Bluesky and Mastodon is that the folks I follow, don’t stop talking about Bluesky and Mastodon, and rambling about how bad X/Threads are.

I spent a week around X and Threads, and the chatter there seems to be about anything else but the respective platform.

Google's Gemini AI escaped the sandbox and hacked three companies. Mass media hysteria 😱 Meanwhile, the actual "hacks." 🤦🤦‍♀️🤦🏼‍♂️ Humans are simultaneously the most intelligent, and the dumbest creatures in the Universe.

What I really miss from JetBrains' Goland, is how easy it was to move types around. You just drag the type across packages, and all the imports get fixed automatically. I haven't been able to replicate it with CLI tools, and with AI agents, big refactors are even more wasteful.

Has anyone been able to solve it?

Five years ago, I wrote a book on using Go for algorithmic generative art to show its versatility beyond servers and CLIs. I’m just as excited to this day. Here is an animated simulation of the Three-Body-Problem. #golang

Arjan's take is so much on point here. As a programming tool, AI is much better than I have ever been (even after 20+ years). But software engineering is much more about chiseling things away than dumping massive amounts of code in a PR: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAsvDoM9WJw&t=510s

I love commits that replace unnecessary 3rd-party dependencies with pure standard-library code: https://github.com/preslavrachev/decruft/commit/802f2523a88c17f5606c23a60e175fdea6d8f13d

They call programmers these days "the condom between Claude Code and production."

But so has been public administration.

For decades.

I figured, since I effectively play the role of an engineering manager to machines now, I might as well ask them to play Estimation Poker and give me their guesstimates at the start of each task 😁

Except for the very, very explicit language in this article, this is exactly how I feel about Go: https://blainsmith.com/articles/just-fucking-use-go/

Oh, and the added benefit is that AI agents usually write the same Go code that I would, because, you know, the language is dumb and boring (in a great way).

With all due respect to Supabase. I am sure it's a great piece of software (it sits on top of Postgres, after all). Sadly, it has turned into a Mar-a-Lago for bros who want to teach you how to build software, without having written a single line of code in their lives.

You don’t need a detector for AI-generated text.

You need a detector for mediocre and low-to-average text.

That’s a far more difficult job.

But not impossible.

For whoever still hasn't had a listen to it, I was a guest on my favorite @cupogo@techhub.social podcast a few days ago. It was a ton of fun, and given the chance to talk to Shay and Jonathan again, I'd do it 100%: https://preslav.me/2026/06/17/cup-o-go-podcast-episode/

You can use Claude Code, and be a great programmer.

You may not use Claude Code, and still remain a terrible programmer.

I knew people who never used code completion on principle. They didn’t get far.

Also knew people who used all kinds of tools, and didn’t get far, either.

It’s all relative.

It's way, way overdue, but Generative Art in Go is now officially typo-free (something it should have been since 2021, but better late, than never). Naturally, I'd like to celebrate it, so I created a limited-time offer which should give new readers a 33% discount.

Check it out, it's probably still worth it: https://p5v.gumroad.com/l/generative-art-in-golang/typofree #programming #golang

With all due respect, neither the #ActivityPub, nor #ATProto will create a new Web. The Web was a happy coincidence, not something designed by committee. You cannot engineer virality. It just happens. RSS happened. ATProto is interesting from a technical perspective, but way too over-engineered.

Lost in Translation is a delight for the thinking mind, and a torture for the one seeking dopamine comfort. There is no plot in the classical sense. Scenes randomly weave into one another with little context, leaving intentional gaps that only your mind can fill in. Conversations dissolve into city noise. The people become background. The city breathes in the foreground. That inversion says everything without explaining it. https://preslav.me/2026/05/04/lost-in-translation-movie-impressions/

Life advice, you didn't ask me for:

Your nervous system learned early that needing things out loud gets you nothing.

So, you stopped asking and called it independence.

That wiring served you then.

It costs you now.

Those who claim that the reMarkable Paper Pro Move is a terrible device, have obviously never held one in their hands. It’s a great ebook reader, on top of an already fantastic note-taking tablet.

Read my lips: if you are planning to get the SuperNote instead, you should reconsider.

When people ask me about why I’m so chill about current world affairs, politics, AI, etc., I like to use a chart like this one. Yes, things may seem bad now, but they’ve been way worse before. They’ve been better too, but so will they be again, given enough time. Nothing is permanent.

In case, you are all eyeballing Rust now after DHH endorsed it, keep in mind that it comes at a cost. I don't mean comprehension, agents can tackle that. It's the pure iteration slowldown caused by build speed. If your boss wants 100s of PRs/d now, you won't be able to reach the KPI that way.

Replying to
@Varpie @murmel_social If that implies using a "sneaky algorithm," but one that actually helps you - so be it. As for our use of “AI” - it's an old classification algo we developed a decade ago. It helps us identify and mark interesting longreads amidst all the doomsday bullshit that gets spread on social. Nothing ever gets sent to Anthropic / OpenAI etc. Even we rent our own GPU machines, so we don't sell our souls to those. It's expensive as hell, but keeps our sanity.

Thinking of MCP as “service discovery” is about the same as thinking of blockchains as “storage.” Does the job within the tight circumstances, but pretty terrible for any general-purpose use.

To dissuade management and CTOs from slapping the term MCP on any API imaginable (because they will).

@oliverandrich@social.tchncs.de the truth is, it’s not for everyone, just as Apple products won’t match some very nuanced needs. But, on a product level, it’s just perfect. Functionality-wise, it’s a few iterations behind BooX and SuperNote. Having used the Nomad for a week, it was a complete disappointment for me. Wanted to like it so much, after reading the reviews, but it ended up being a box of different functions, without a coherent thought of how a user is going to use this thing as paper replacement.

Negative parallelism ("It's not just that ... it's the other thing") is such a PITA in AI text that I am sick of it. I've set up a series of deterministic linter rules to flag texts with those and more, using a tool called Vale: https://vale.sh/ - you don't want to know how much of AI text comes down my feeds.

Vale is a command-line tool that brings code-like linting to prose. Cross-platform, written in Go, and run by teams at AWS, NVIDIA, Microsoft, GitLab, and Red Hat.

PSA: If you use Al Dente to curb battery charging above 80%, and plan to upgrade to macOS 27 Beta, keep in mind that Al Dente currently does not work with it. It won't crash, but still, it will let the battery go up to 100%

Clicking on manual discharge works, though.
