I recently read an interesting article from someone that helped with the initial design of Signal and who left in anger over Marlin Moxyspike refusing to even discuss the option to not require phone numbers. From the article it was very clear that this was apparently non-negotiable from the start… The other interesting detail was that apparently there was enough money involved to fly developers from all over the US to Hawaii for a week long hackathon in a rented fancy villa for building the initial Signal prototype, coincidentally very close to the NSA facilities that Edward Snowden used to work in… Of course this isn’t proof of anything, but it has a certain smell to it.

Yes, just like it isn’t the Signal Foundation that collects the connection metadata, but AWS on which Signal runs and Signal is collecting just enough metadata that it is possible to correlate the metadata AWS has with the account details that Signal has. Or Google and the notification metadata and device hardware identifies, etc. Or the metadata that Cloudflare collects when Signal uses them as a CDN…

Another centralized silo is not the solution, and Threema was recently sold to a dodgy investment consortium that seems to have been purely set up to hide the true owners (and all the original founders of the company left).

This specific design maybe not, but similar light plywood-epoxy catamarans based on designs by James Wharram are well regarded and proven open-ocean sailboats.

Except that the risk of a 35 foot catamaran flipping over is very significantly lower in the first place.

No, he only says that it is affordable to a medium sized budget. My educated guess is that it costs around 25,000€ to build this. The ePropulsion engine and battery you can see in the video is about 10,000€ of that.

For some people it is. But I think you are making a category error in thinking that a concept that is primarily ment to open the imagination and move the overton window would lend itself as an activist movement. It is supplementary to one though: https://wiki.slrpnk.net/articles:infrapolitics

A user configurable "hardware" privacy switch is a contradiction in itself. If it can be controlled by software it can't do what the marketing claims 🤦 Otherwise, Mediatek soc... likely riddled by binary blob drivers and bad mainline kernel support, but lets see.

Old DDR3 ECC is actually cheaper than regular DDR3 RAM, and it generally works with AMD CPUs (who unlike Intel don't artificially restrict ECC support to their enterprise offerings). But tbh, ECC is generally not needed and I wouldn't bother designing a system around it. Use a file system with checksums and regularly scrub the drives and you should not have any major issues with random bit flips that ECC protects against.

Do you have a source for that? I recently talked to a Brazilian Fediverse server operator about this and she didn't mention anything like that at all.

It is many things. Basically a way to store some XML documents on the xmpp server and allow subscription to them. It is used for a lot of background stuff in XMPP whenever you want to store some structured data on the server.

You are making a category error. Home cooking is a thing, and it is the predominant way of feeding yourself and also some lazy freeloaders aka your kids. Or to make a different analogy: you are trying to compete as a restaurant with people wanting to organize a barbeque with their friends. That’s never going to work.

As long as you live in a capitalist state, the most success you can hope for is to become the next Kraft Foods with all the same issues (and very likely the same stock owners soon after). The only winning move is to not play their game.

Well, an alternative explanation would be LLM agent accounts, which started to appear on the fediverse around the time the above graph started to go up. Here on Lemmy they are a bit delayed and only started to sign up in larger quantities in the last 2-3 months.

Many Fediverse servers require that as an anti-spam measure, here on Lemmy as well. It works nicely.
