Weird question for the #RStats #dataviz folks. I've just run into an edge case I've never encountered before and I'm struggling to troubleshoot it.
I have an annotation in my plot where I'm using a unicode arrow symbol to point to something. (Let's set aside for the moment whether this is or isn't a silly way to put an arrow in your plot...)
It renders just fine in the window created in the interactive R session (first attached screenshot). But for some reason, when using ggsave() or rendering the Quarto document, the diagonal arrow (and only the diagonal one!) gets turned into an ugly emoji (second attached screenshot), even though these arrow symbols are all present in the font I'm using. If I render to SVG, for example, it doesn't do the emoji thing, it's only doing it with PNG.
My question is: what the hell? Is this ragg that's doing this? How would I get it to not do this? Any help appreciated.
