OpenCitations
An independent infrastructure organization dedicated to the publication of open bibliographic and citation data
🌱OpenCitations has always grown thanks to its community of institutions and people who believe in the value of open scholarly data, and now we're asking for your input.
🏗️To continue building an infrastructure that truly reflects the needs of the scholarly community, we’ve launched the OpenCitations Community Survey.
Whether you are a supporter, a partner institution, a user, or have simply come across OpenCitations by chance (even if you’ve never used our data or looked closely at what we do), this survey is your opportunity to share your experience, tell us what works, what could be improved, and what you’d like to see in the future. Your insights will directly inform how we evolve our activities and services to better support open and responsible research.
⏲️It takes about 10 minutes to complete, and every single response helps us strengthen OpenCitations as a community-driven, transparent, and sustainable open infrastructure.

We are pleased to announce that the Proceedings of the Workshop on Open Citations and Open Scholarly Metadata (#WOOC2025), held in #Bologna on 28–29 May 2025, are now available on Zenodo.
📖 The index volume: https://zenodo.org/records/17199918
📚 All individual papers, each with its own DOI, are available in the dedicated Zenodo community: https://zenodo.org/communities/wooc2025/records?q=&l=list&p=1&s=10&sort=newest
The proceedings include the report of the Bologna Meeting on Open Research Information, as well as invited talks and peer-reviewed papers.
We warmly thank all authors and participants who made WOOC 2025 such a stimulating event, and we invite the community to read and share these open contributions, helping us advance transparency and openness in scholarly communication.
📢OpenCitations Governance Evolution
Over the past few years, #OpenCitations has grown into a core component of the global Open Science ecosystem. To match this growth, we have now adopted a new governance model, providing a clearer, more robust, and sustainable institutional foundation.
Developed with guidance from our International Advisory Board and in collaboration with the Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna, the new framework strengthens autonomy, formalizes long-term commitments, and aligns with internationally recognized best practices for Open Science sustainability.
This is a key milestone, reflecting the shared commitment of our community to ensure OpenCitations continues to operate in the service of researchers and institutions worldwide.

🔭What’s next for OpenCitations in 2026?
Following the analysis of our Community Survey, we’ve identified the key steps that will guide our work over the coming year.
Our focus: strengthening engagement with our core community, while ensuring sustainable growth, balancing community input with our capacity and resources.
We will pursue this through targeted actions aimed at:
📌improving usability with tutorials tailored to specific use cases
📌expanding data coverage
📌advancing interoperability through backend development
📌enabling new workflows for crowdsourced citation data

A revolution in #OpenCitations: forget the multiple indexes, the new ingestion workflow is designed to produce just two comprehensive collections: the OpenCitations Index, now containing almost 2 BILLION unique citations, and OpenCitations Meta, for the open bibliographical metadata.
