@pfmoore@mastodon.social @ancoghlan@mastodon.social @nedbat@hachyderm.io I have more than a dozen virtual environments for pyqtgraph development. This is due to supporting a variety of different combinations of dependencies (and different versions of those). Many virtual environment managers assume a singular “project environment” which is why they don’t work for me :(

@brianokken @tacaswell @mpirnat pre-calc was without a doubt the math class I found most difficult. I went on to study differential equations, vector calculus, linear algebra, and a small handful of partial differential equations (and engineering class focused on the heat and wave equations). Trig/pre-calculus is a GRIND

@SnoopJ @brianokken @tacaswell @mpirnat its been about a decade since I was using 3d CAD regularly…. At the time I never came across a tolerance stack up analysis tool that worked, forget worked well; just never came across one that worked lol I used excel for the critical constraints and then used the automatic solver for everything else, which was more than sufficient.

@brianokken @tacaswell @mpirnat I have never had to do integration by parts lol, but the common vector calculus stuff (cross products and dot products) keep coming up all the time for my pyqtgraph work. Linear algebra periodically sneaks in in random places. I would rarely say I _need_ those tools but having some familiarity has really set me apart from peers who are more …math reluctant. In terms of how much pre-calculus I use? Lmao almost none, although I suppose with all that grinding I have developed a bit of a sense where there is a trig identity that I can use to simplify my life

@brianokken @tacaswell @mpirnat had a high school math teacher that almost convinced me math wasn’t for me; despite liking it so much (I will admit I was a lazy high school student who put minimal effort overall). Some YouTube math lectures really got me through difficult subjects

@brianokken @tacaswell @mpirnat there is a flip side to this, a lot more STEM discoveries would be made if engineers were more willing to experiment with more complicated math, and move away from just basic algebra (this view is from the perspective of the mechanical engineering field).

@livelakeontario@mastodon.social @mcc@mastodon.social similar to Amman, Jordan right now, I think a sandstorm is making its way through. Was about to go for a run, but my lungs noped right out of that.

@JxckS Coast Guard veteran here; this pissed me off so much, the service is soooo deprived of money/funds that their ships are often older than the people sailing them.

@jimmyb @keyboards I have an AEK64, but a generic white case… getting something more appropriately themed would be great

@brianokken @tacaswell @mpirnat I don’t remember having to do much in the way of hand calculations, memorization of the multiplication tables and being able to quickly do addition/subtraction in my head helped; admittedly it’s been a while but I don’t recall feeling frustrated with the amount of work I had to do by hand …most of my classes I recall being pretty flexible on what calculator you can use.

@brianokken @tacaswell @mpirnat I certainly made my jump in mechanical engineering due to be willing to write code instead of use a handheld calculator… but it is relatively common in mechanical engineering (although even a lot of folks there migrate to excel). I can imagine field folks may use handheld calculators…
