With the talk of SSD/HDD shortage, I've decided to trawl through all my old files and sort out what I don't need.
I'm intending to put files in two categories:
- important non-replaceable stuff (generally things I've created); hopefully I can get this down to <64GB?
- probably re-obtainable files (e.g. backups of DVDs, games, programs, etc)
It's somewhat daunting with several terabytes to go through. Does anyone have tips or other ideas about doing this?
This is less about "backing up files", and more about "reducing my digital possessions (burdens)".

Over time I've really come to appreciate argv as a concept. Environment variables on the other hand... :neofox_glare:
My current command template for re-encoding videos with ffmpeg:
ffmpeg -i [input] -map 0 -s [width]x[height] -c:v libx265 -ac 2 -c:a libopus -c:s copy [output].mkv
"-map 0" makes sure any attachments (e.g. subtitle fonts) are included.
"-s [width]x[height]" resizes the video. To keep the original size, you can omit this.
"-c:v libx265" sets the video codec. This one works fine for playback with mpv on my computer, and gets ~1/3 file size compared to the defaults.
"-c:a libopus" sets the audio codec. Again, this works in mpv and has small file size for good quality. "-ac 2" mixes down to stereo if needed, since libopus can't handle more channels.
"-c:s copy" preserves subtitles, if they exist. You can replace this with "-f:v subtitles=[input]" if you want to burn them in, where [input] is the input path repeated.
I'm looking for articles/blog posts about implementing rich text editors. Does anyone have recommendations?
it kinda surprises me that, despite all our technological advancements, humanity hasn't come close to "solving" food. wouldn't it be cool if you could buy a solar powered portable food generator? instead all we got is Deforestation II: Even More Beef
I've heard about the new age verification laws for operating systems... do I need to make the repos for Essence and flip private?
