Webdesign people! Where are you finding inspiration these days? Dribbble is full of dead slop and Awwwards features sites that look identical since 2018.

@jaffathecake Honestly, maybe the reality is just that we developers nowadays are positioned too much by business practices that the majority is indeed strongly supportive. I don’t know anymore. I am tired of this all. When you’re sounding the alarm early you’re being negative and when you criticize it when it’s a manifest problem then you’re being called complicit. I don’t know anymore. Im a modern Luddite at this point

@jaffathecake what are we as developers supposed to do here? We have literally no say in this whatsoever. It’s a genuine question, what are we supposed to? Because I subjectively feel like we could have done something maybe 10 years ago, but now…?

@af yes indeed. I would argue that market dynamics shouldn't have any influence on the infrastructure of modern human connection.

@jeromecoupe@mastodon.social Heyo Jérôme! This question comes out of the blue, but I still often refer to your post about i18n in eleventy: https://www.webstoemp.com/blog/multilingual-sites-eleventy/ - though I wonder, are you doing things differently today, now that it has been 7 years since you originally published that? I'm currently adding an english variant to an 11ty site and so I was wondering.

Multilingual sites with Eleventy

Eleventy might not have multilingual and localisation capabilities out of the box, but you can build a pretty good setup using global data files, collections and Nunjucks as a templating language.

@lukito@pelicanfly.fyi there’s a YouTuber who pronounces “Godot”, the game engine, as “gada”. I suffer a little seizure every time

@annaecook@mastodon.social whenever someone says that, I am reminded that prettyness, especially in design, is nothing but a synonym for “conformity”. Anything that strays from it is by that definition ugly, and lives in the margin. And in that, considering that societies have a well documented history of erasing and hiding things they deem not pretty, not conforming enough, I see nothing but hubris, ignorance and of course ableism - qualities inherit to the industry -not craft- of design.

Today I had to once again be reminded to NEVER run with some emergency calories. Bonked very hard at 13km and just barely managed to avert a panic attack. Having full body sweats at -2 degrees as your entire heads starts to tingle and goes numb and barely being able to concentrate is NOT fun. Been a few years since that happened.

@bramus@front-end.social ... consider the font-size. Should it not? What happens when I pass container units? Will they also ignore their relation to a container? @leaverou@front-end.social

Alright so, in a Cross-Document View Transition, what happens when User is located further down the document but the transition would move them to the top of the new document?

For example, you have a list of things and filter-options in the sidebar. Each filtered list state is its own URL. Using view transition, it would animate the items as user clicks different filter options. But transitioning from further down the page would look awkward. Can the scroll position be preserved?

Damn.. that hurts to read. https://whitep4nth3r.com/blog/goodbye-forever-probably/

All the lovely humans remove themselves from my corner of the internet.

Goodbye, forever, probably.

Goodbye, forever, probably.

I’m leaving developer relations and developer education. Rather than disappear completely unannounced, I wanted to tell you why.

@bramus@front-end.social having read your explanation, I am even more confused now. I am aware that without @ property the var passed is not a length, but I didn't know that 'length' forces value computation. From a code point of view, choosing an em unit I am describing "this should be in relation to the current font-size". em is a length. Why should that mean that the characteristics of the unit are getting nullified? even if it is computed, at the point of computation, it should still ... @leaverou@front-end.social having

@leaverou@front-end.social oof that is really difficult to understand, all of it. I’d expect the width to be 10em, not computed pixels. Do I misunderstand this? Apply will transform relative values?
